Love is in the air—and on the windows and doors—in Saratoga - East Bay Times

Valentine’s Day gives us all a chance to show love, and Saratogans seem to have enjoyed sharing theirs via “Love Notes” that decorate the windows of businesses up and down Big Basin Way.

The notes are handmade, and there doesn’t seem to be any angst over wording or reluctance to show artistic talent.

Take a walk up Big Basin this weekend and you’re sure to get a shot of positivity that will put a smile on your face. Storefronts in the Village are filled with hearts and warm messages—what Valentine’s Day is all about.

The sweet expressions continue a 10-year tradition that began when former Saratoga City Council member Susie Nagpal was diagnosed with cancer. Friends throughout the Saratoga community wanted to write letters and notes of encouragement to this much-respected woman. How to show their affection? Their solution was to publicly post their notes in the Village for all to see, along with a big banner that read, “We love you, Susie.”

To say Nagpal was touched is an understatement. It was such a positive experience that it was decided to keep up the tradition each Valentine’s Day, despite Nagpal’s death in 2010.

Everyone is encouraged to post Love Notes. Saratoga’s valentine Betty Peck made eight Love Notes that hang in the Chamber office. Saratoga U.S. Marine Veteran Rod Bejarano’s message says, “God Bless America.”

“I love to read each ‘Love Note’ before posting it in our Chamber window,” Kelly Mandrano, the Chamber’s office manager, said.

Most notes were created by Saratoga students from St. Andrews, the Village Preschool, Kirk House Preschool and Saratoga Community Preschool, who’ve papered downtown windows with hearts.

Students, teachers and parents from Saratoga Community Preschool showed up at the Fat Robin/La Mesa to post their notes. Teacher Olivia Griswald said, “The children were so excited to come to put up their notes; they could hardly wait.”

Laurel Perusa and Jill Hunter provide the energy behind this annual event.

“It’s a way to get people into the Village,” Perusa said. “And it’s working– people enjoy the notes. A visitor told me the Saratoga Love Notes reminded her of Valentine’s Day decades ago when she was a child and are a happy walk down memory lane.”

Volunteer Jill Hunter said, “The Love Note project highlights the good feelings our citizens have about their community and each other. Tourists say the notes are such fun to read!”

Participating Saratoga merchants include Big Basin Café, La Mesa, The Barn Owl, Skin Prophecy, USA Nails, Bai Tong Thai Restaurant and more.

Jill Hunter summed it up, “Susie would be pleased to know that 10 years later her Saratoga Love Story will go on and on.”

The Village Love Notes will remain displayed through Monday, Feb. 16.
