Got up a little later than usual and as I entered the dining room, my eyes caught sight of something on the kitchen table. A large red box, shaped like a heart, with a card on the top, was at my place. I slid into my chair and opened the card and smiled, as I read that special Valentine card from my husband, Richard. After I’d gone to bed, he must have put that box of candy and card for me to find in the morning. My eyes filled with tears of joy as I read those special words on the card and I thought about the first time he gave me a box of candy, in a heart-shaped box, 72 years ago. Funny, how memories can return to fill your thoughts and recall past years to reminisce about.
Seventy-two years ago, when we were dating, Richard brought me a heart-shaped box of chocolates similar to this one, and I remember feeling so special, as I’d never had a gift like that before. Remembering brought a smile to my face and I treasured the thought of that day, so many years ago. Now, all these years later, we are still thankful for the love we have shared all these years.
Thinking how special Valentine’s Day has become and how much money is spent on flowers, candy, cards, jewelry and other gifts is amazing. It’s hard to believe that only one day is set aside to show the love we feel for others. Maybe, if we would let each day of the year glow with love for one another, there wouldn’t be time to argue, disagree, fight and hate.
This reminds me of a Scripture found in Luke 10:27 which says, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength, and with all your mind, and love your neighbor as yourself.” Now, if we all did that, we would have 365 days to celebrate love all year long, not just on Valentine’s Day.
Another verse for all of us to remember is found in Romans 5:8 that says, “God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Maybe we are looking for love in all the wrong places, when it’s right in front of us. My hope for each of you is that you find that special love of God, of loved ones and friends, to enjoy every day.
In the meantime, I’ll keep sending my letters to the editor, right here from my kitchen table, to all of you, with love and hugs.
