Spread the love, fight hunger a jar of peanut butter at a time | Opinion - Tennessean

opinion

All month, love has been in the air with cards, candy and flowers as folks spread the love to the special people in their lives. And while we do the same at Second Harvest, we also "Spread the Love" a little differently – through our annual campaign to help those less fortunate by encouraging our friends to donate jars of peanut butter and other spreadable foods for our neighbors in need.

Our campaign goal is to include one jar of peanut butter in every emergency food box we distribute. Just last year, we provided food boxes to more than 90,000 individuals struggling with food insecurity.

Because of its nutritional value, long shelf life and versatility, peanut butter can be an essential item to those struggling with hunger. Packed with protein, it’s one of the most nutritional items we can keep stocked at our distribution centers here in Nashville, Smyrna and Camden.

There is a high demand for it, but this most-needed item is not routinely donated to Second Harvest. And every February we hope to change that.

So we’re asking all our friends in the region to help us this month by donating peanut butter or other spreadable foods, hosting a food drive with peanut butter being the featured item, giving financially and getting their neighbors involved so we can fight hunger and feed hope.

Our website (https://ift.tt/2uaP7EE) has a lot of information about “Spread the Love” and other ways you can get involved and help make a difference. Right here in Middle and West Tennessee, 1 in 8 of our neighbors – including 1 in 6 children – struggle with food insecurity. They simply don’t know where their next meal is coming from, and helping us “Spread the Love” is one way you can get involved.

P.S. If you’d like to wear your support for “Spread the Love,” we hope you’ll visit our friends at Project 615’s website (https://ift.tt/2T0lgXM) and purchase a red “Spread Love. It’s the Nashville Way” shirt. For every shirt sold, we can provide 20 meals for those in need.
