Scott Young's "Always Forever Yours" at Dairy Block is all about love, loss - The Know

At first glance, Scott Young’s newest work is shiny, happy and fun — bright red neon lights spell out phrases like, “Yes, always yes,” and a multi-colored heart with an arrow through it hangs from the ceiling as a festive chandelier.

But look a little closer and you’ll see that his “Always Forever Yours” exhibit is also full of heartbreak and pain. But that’s just love, isn’t it?

If you go

“That’s what I really like about the neon medium — it’s really candy-like and glossy,” Young said. “What I try to do is have this deeper message once you start unpacking it, and most of it’s actually pretty sad. That’s the homerun for me with my work.”

The exhibit, which opened last week and is on display through Feb. 28 at the Dairy Block, features a wall covered by hundreds of love letters, many of them describing the agony or anger we feel when a relationship turns sour. Visitors are encouraged to write and add their own love letter to the wall; a work table with markers, ink-stamps, pens and paper sits in the middle of the gallery.

But even if you can’t make it, you can still participate — and Young hopes you do. He’s asking people from all over the world to mail love letters to Denver to be part of the show.

When it’s all over at the end of the month, Young is hosting a public shredding party to destroy the letters.

The whole process is meant to be cathartic. Write down your feelings, stick them on the wall and then watch your words get slashed by a paper shredder.

“People like destruction in general, but there’s also this idea of writing something down — it comes out of you and then the story goes away,” Young said. “It has to do with that letting go and that process of, ‘You hurt me. I hate you. Now go away.’ ”

Relationships are a huge source of inspiration for Young, the Denver-based artist best known for making clever neon word art. His work centers primarily on the duality of “romance and unromance,” he says, the idea that human connection can take us from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows.

The inspiration for “Always Forever Yours” came when Young began documenting all of his belongings, a project he’s calling “One Million Things.”

“I decided, one day in my studio, ‘Damn, I must have a million things in my life,’ so I just started documenting everything I own by taking pictures of it,” he said. “I came to realize that the things that are most valuable to me are the handwritten letters people have given me and, in particular, love letters from my past — including breakup letters.”

In a time when eggplant and heart-eye emojis reign supreme, the exhibit also serves as a reminder of the power of a handwritten note. There are generations of people who won’t have boxes full of old love letters to read when they get older, and that’s a little sad, Young said.

“People are pouring their hearts out in a text and that goes away — it doesn’t stick around,” he said. “There’s no documentation of relationships.”
