February. The month of love.

Cupid’s arrow has loosened into eight couples who have entered The Daily News’ Valentine’s Day Couples Contest. Their devotion to each other on full display, whose love comes across the strongest? That will be decided by our readers.

The voting for the Valentine’s Day Couples Contest continues until Feb. 4, when the winner will be announced at 4 p.m. To vote for your favorite couple, go to The Batavia Daily News Facebook page where we have compiled their photographs in the 2020 Valentine Love Stories photo album. Here are their stories:

Meeting in the blizzard of 1977, the couple had been stranded together at the same bar. However it wouldn’t be until they met again in college and began talking about the blizzard when they realized they were standing next to each other in the same bar during that time. Sharing a few classes and working the second-shift, the budding couple would quickly leave class, get something to eat, often times eating at the same fast food place before going off to their jobs.

By the next semester they began to date, and married in 1983. Now they have six children and 15 grandchildren, and are “still loving life.”

It all started with the first day of senior year when CJ introduced himself to Mary with a smile and a handshake. In March 2012, Mary Kay decided to ask him out. His response?

“Can my parents come?”

While his parents did not end up coming on the date, Saturday, March 23, 2012 marked the beginning of the rest of their lives.

Days turned into years, and the two moved in together, became proud dog parents and traveled.

Eventually they started a kitchen remodeling business together, and have recently bought a house to restore into a new home for when they marry in October.

Ray and Nellie met in high school and dated for a couple of years. However, they broke up when Ray graduated, where he would go into the Air Force and serve for eight years. Two years later Nellie would graduate and marry.

Both of them found themselves in an unhappy marriage and divorced before meeting again after 20 years.

Marrying in 1972, they combined their two families — Ray’s two sons and Nellie’s three daughters — and got through a couple of rough spots. They have now been married for 47 years.

“We don’t look like 80’s plus, but we are,” said Nellie. “It’s our faith in God that keeps us going.”

Two months pregnant, Casandra met Cody when both were 20. Cody stepped up and became Brinley’s father and has been here ever since.

“This man is so kind and caring especially when it comes to our daughter. He always puts us first in every situation,” Casandra said. “He is a great man to call my daughter’s father. I thank him everyday for always putting up with me and my short red headed temper.”

Tara and Daniel’s first meeting was at Valley View Lanes bowling alley in 1993. However, Daniel ended up dating her friend, and it wouldn’t be until 2000 when she saw him at the Billy Goats bar on a techno-Tuesday. They began talking and started dating on Valentine’s Day that year. They were married on March 3, 2010.

They had a son together, Tristan, 14, and Dan acts as a father figure to her daughter Briana, who is 25.

“We have had many good and many bad times, but we always get through them. He works hard and makes sure we are taken care of,” Tara said. “I love him with all that I am and can’t picture life without him.”

At their best friend’s wedding in June 2010, Jim and Maura made eye contact. Not a month later, both were both fresh off of breakups from long-term relationships and met at their friend’s house, whose wedding they had just celebrated. By August, Maura’s friend was asking her if it was ‘OK’ to give Jim her number, since he had been asking.

“I wasn’t interested, but ultimately decided that there was no harm. If anything else, I make a new friend,” Maura said.

“For over a month we would call, text, and hang out, but I wasn’t interested in a relationship,” she said. “By October we had our first official date and we met each other’s families that Thanksgiving.”

While dating, the couple gained a son. They got engaged and bought a house in 2013, married in 2014, and their daughter was born in 2015.

Lisa Labadee and Brian Dorman met at work, becoming fast friends until a weekend hangout camping with friends.

They have been together ever since.

“Both of us had previous horrible relationships which only taught us how to be amazing to each other,” Lisa said.

“I never thought I would find the love of my life at 40 years old,” she continued. “I couldn’t ask for a more attentive, loving, honorable, caring man.

“A late start in life to an amazing future together!”

Jim and Stacy began talking on the phone on Dec. 17, 2018, after Stacy caught up with her friend at Wal-Mart.

“She said, ‘You have a boyfriend?’ I said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘Do you have any friends?’ She said she would think about it,” Stacy said.

“Then out of the blue she said, ‘Yes, I know Jim. He’s a good guy. I know you had a rough divorce.’ She took my picture and showed me his — right in the middle of Wal-Mart!”

The next night Stacy texted Jim, who gave her a call saying he was getting ready to leave for Florida.

So for two weeks they talked on the phone, and New Year’s Eve was their first date.

However, while Stacy was having a lot of fun, she felt it wasn’t going to work out. So she texted him that, and Jim came to Stacey’s work.

Upon seeing his sad face, Stacey’s heart melted and they’ve been together ever since, moving in together in April.
