Keke Palmer Is Looking for Love—and a Good Lather - Vanity Fair

Walk me through your beauty preparations for a first date.

I would say, of course, making sure I'm showered and good; I would probably use that Vitamin C body wash. From there I would maybe, maybe not wash my hair. It depends on what kind of week that is. I try to keep my makeup really, really light because I like the effortless vibe. Plus, with my job, I'm always beat to the gods, you know? So when I'm not working, I want people to really see me. Some MAC makeup might be cool; a little Dior Lip Glow, or maybe a Laneige lip mask. No lashes—just a light Dior mascara. And my outfit is usually very comfortable. I have to be so dressed up and done up all the time at work, so when it's time for me to hang out with friends or do something like a date night, I go the opposite way and try to be as understated as possible.

What about nails?

Now nails, honey. The nails! It depends on the vibe, right? The nail artist [Dawn Sterling] who did my nails for today—I went to her page, and she was doing a lot of this old-school ’90s-inspired type of stuff. I loved it. Sometimes I’ll do just a regular pop of color, and that's it. But now I'm getting back into the vibe where I want to get a little bit funkier with the nails again.

What about grooming pet peeves on the other side of the date? Are there things that might turn you off?

Obviously bad breath is like, “Oh, no, love.” Not-moisturized lips—keep yourself up! I would love the teeth to be off-white or white, you know? [laughs] Make sure there is no crust in the eyes. I need nothing in the eyes; it’s like, “Oh my gosh, did you wash your face this morning?” And smell good. That’s the basic one, but those are specific pet peeves of mine.

Is there such a thing as too much smelling good?

I don't like when people go with more of a musky cologne. Guys, give me something a little bit sweeter, a little more demure, not so loud with it. I want to come by you and be like, “Is he wearing something?” rather then be, like, “Oh, he wearing something!” I don’t want it to bust me over the head.

Given last year’s Vanity Fair meme moment, centered around you and a photo of Dick Cheney, what random person would you rather moonlight in a meme with you this year?

Eugene Levy. He’s cool! I love Bringing Down the House. It was with Steve Martin and Queen Latifah and Eugene Levy. His character was so in love with Queen Latifah. He was like, “C'mon, mama.” I remember loving him. When you said a random person: Eugene Levy.

You're a creative multitasker, with music, film, and television. Given that we're at the start of 2020, what do you hope fills more of your pie in the year ahead?

Love! I think my career is taking off, so it's really a personal life—being able to find that balance—because it's going to inspire my work more. It's always about transition, always about evolving. 2019: Hustlers, GMA3. 2020, Olay body partnership. There are so many awesome things going on career-wise that I, of course, want to continue and grow in, but personal life inspires your creativity.

If you were to write your own personals ad, your “long walks on the beach” type of thing, what would you say?

“My name is Lauren, but my peeps call me Kekes." [She pauses.] "I love going to the movies, being goofy, and sometimes having a little smoochie.” Something that gives it a little rhyme because I need to show character, and shows that I'm still flirty with it but quirky. You get to know the real me: Lauren and Kekes. You know what I’m saying?

Let's block ads! (Why?)
