Stuffed with Love: Erie family donating plush toys to emergency agencies on Valentine’s Day - Longmont Times-Call

Meredith, Garrett and Travis Foster spent a recent afternoon piling stuffed animals into two boxes.

The brand-new plush toys were being readied for the first step in their journey to new homes. Eventually they will end up in the arms of children in need of a little comfort. First they will find their way to area fire departments and law enforcement agencies.

Meredith, 8, Garrett, 6, and Travis, 2, with the help of their mom, Amanda Foster, have been collecting brand new stuffed animals to donate to area fire and area law enforcement agencies to spread love for Valentine’s Day. Their goal is end result is to make sure the agencies have enough stuffed animals to help provide comfort to kids during emergencies.

Foster and her husband met members of Mountain View Fire Department during an event in the fall. She said they were so nice so she began following them on social media.

“In November, they asked for some stuffed animal donations,” Foster said. “Unfortunately, with the holidays, it was a little too much to try and do it then. Fortunately, they were able to collect the amount they needed. So, we said let’s do it for Valentine’s Day.”

Foster added since Mountain View recently had its own collection, the family will donate about 20 or 25 stuffed animals to Erie Police Department and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, and hopes to donate some to the Lafayette Fire Department and Weld County Sheriff’s Department as well.

“When (the kids) feel scared, they give them a stuffy to feel happy and to feel comfort,” Garrett said.

Meredith said the goal was to collect 50, and as of Jan. 24, the kids had collected 71.

Inside the boxes were stuffed elephants, bears, a unicorn, a round puffy fox, a penguin and Garret’s favorites, a big sloth and a small dragon.

“We’re excited about the different sizes and the different types of animals because kids come in all different shapes and sizes, so stuffies should too,” Foster said.

Foster posted on social media requesting donations, and Meredith emailed friends and family asking for help.

Garrett said he’s excited about the different stuffed animals they received, while Meredith enjoyed reaching out to people.

“We’ve had a number of businesses here that had donated,” Foster said. “We’ve had complete strangers in the wonderful community of Erie either bring us stuffies or we have a Paypal account, so we’ve had a number (of donations) there. We thought spreading the love on Valentine’s Day would be great.”

Foster said the family set up the Paypal account for those who can’t drop off or mail donations, which will allow the kids to purchase stuffed animals to add to the collection.

The deadline to donate is Feb. 13.

“We’re going to make the donation on Valentine’s Day,” Meredith said.

On the fridge, the Fosters have a countdown to the date on bright yellow paper, helping the kids know how many animals to go until their goal. The kids were able to achieve their original goal in about 10 to 15 days, Foster said. Now they’ve raised the bar.

“We’re going to try for 100,” Meredith said.

It may not be Feb. 14 yet, but the kids said they know they want to continue the tradition next year.

“We’re going to collect books for the children’s hospital, or collect food for the animal shelter,” Meredith said.

Foster added they hope it becomes an annual tradition, and spread the love however they can.
