Sexual health educator to talk love at Arizona Storytellers show - AZCentral

You may look at Angelica Lindsey-Ali and think you know her story, but you're probably wrong.

As a Muslim woman donning a colorful abaya, Lindsey-Ali said she was left out of girl-talk conversations about love, sex and relationships because of the way she looked.

"People might have felt they were too raunchy for me or said 'Angelica is very religious, very spiritual'," she said.

But at that moment, in 1998, she realized there was an entire community of women just like her, who needed an outlet to talk about sex and relationships.

So she created one.

Lindsey-Ali is a certified sexual health educator and her platform, The Village Auntie, has become a source of intimacy information for Muslim women worldwide.

"I don't think that what I do is terribly revolutionary. Sex has been around since people. I think that people just don't expect a person who looks like me to talk about sex," she said.

Starting the platform has helped her have greater respect and love for sisterhood, she said. Sex is not always an easy topic to discuss, but a glance at her social media outlets shows that many women have found a safe space to talk sex with Lindsey-Ali.

"I'm propelled by the love of women and how even though I look the way that I do, there's something that's common in all of the women I interact with, and that's a lack of knowledge about our bodies, the early introduction of shame, how we look, how we love and that separation of the erotic from the everyday," Lindsey-Ali said.

Lindsey-Ali will share a story about how she has found love within herself and other women at the Feb. 11 Arizona Storytellers "Love, Like and It's Complicated" show at the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts. Get tickets at https://ift.tt/36JvOPV.

Lindsey-Ali will join Ruchi Kalra, Julia King Kohn, Amanda Morris and Mathew Sandoval in sharing true, first-person stories on stage. All five have been coached by journalists at The Arizona Republic/azcentral as part of the series.

Kalra's story is about how her love story spans continents and decades and how she got her own Bollywood hero. Sandoval's story is about the pain love brings, and the hope we have for the future.

"I can't be the only one struggling with love. I’m hoping my story speaks to other people who may be asking themselves if they have what it takes to love again," Sandoval said.

King Kohn will share how in doing what she was told led her to online dating. Morris will share a story about how love for her was complicated but worth it.

"We shouldn't compartmentalize people just because they look a certain way and that the common threads that bind us together don't always have to be those touchy-feely things. Sometimes they can be the sticky-sweet things like sex," Lindsey-Ali said.

"There are lots of different complexities in life, I hope my story shows that we have a lot more in common."
