This Valentine's Day, service members and local first responders will receive a little extra love courtesy of Project SOUTH and county schools.
Project SOUTH, a military ministry focused on spreading love to military personnel and veterans, partnered with Union County school districts, churches, public libraries and businesses to create homemade or store-bought Valentine's Day cards to send to service members overseas and to local first responders.
Christie Williams, a volunteer with Project SOUTH and U.S. Army veteran, said Terry Sturgis came up with the idea.
"It was pretty much something he wanted to do to give back to the troops and the first responders to let them know we're thinking of them and they're not forgotten," Williams said.
Williams said the organization wanted to include first responders because they're local heroes who are often forgotten.
"We just want them to feel loved," she said.
Williams said she served everywhere from North Carolina to Iraq and Germany to Korea, and understands that morale can be greatly impacted by the passing holiday season.
She said while overseas, it's easy to forget the support and love from the community, so getting something as simple as a handmade card means a lot.
"This is our way to show appreciation, to let you know, 'hey, we are thinking about you, you're not forgotten at all,'" Williams said.
Williams said it's also rewarding to be able to see students getting involved and to see their faces when they make the cards.
She said the deadline to donate and send the cards is Jan. 31, and those who want to participate can drop off cards at Union County public libraries or at a school's front desk. She also said cards are welcome through Valentine's Day since they will be given to first responders as well, and said Project SOUTH will accept cards year-round.
"Someone somewhere could always use the morale … not only during the holidays, but all times of the year," Williams said.
