Belgian’s former king Albert II has finally admitted he fathered a love child more than 50 years ago — after spending decades denying the scandal.
The stunning about-face by the 85-year-old ex-monarch comes after a DNA test proved he is the biological father of Delphine Boel.
His lawyers said he decided “to put an end, with honor and dignity, to this painful procedure.”
Boel, a 51-year-old Belgian artist, claimed Albert was her real dad for two decades before turning to the courts over his paternity. She has maintained her aristocratic mother, Sybille de Selys Longchamps, had an affair with Albert between 1966 and 1984.
The former royal agreed in May to take a DNA test after a Brussels court slapped him with a fine of 5,000 euros — or $5,500 — for each day he refused.
Boel was raised by her mother’s husband, Jacques Boel, and had won a court decision that he was not her “legal father.”
Albert had in the past acknowledged marital problems with his wife queen Paola in the 1970s — but never admitted to having an extramarital affair.
He has three children with Paola, including Belgium’s current king Philippe.
Asked whether his client was entitled to a royal inheritance, Boel’s lawyer Marc Uyttendaele told RTL television that she is “a legitimate child just like any other.”
He said Boel waged her paternity battle “to avoid her children carrying this weight.”
“She had a biological father who brutally rejected her when this paternity publicly emerged,” the lawyer said.
Uyttendaele also slammed the former king’s statement owning up to fathering Boel, saying it “is characterized by a lack of elegance, a lack of humanity … the statement continues to confirm this lack of love.”
Albert took over the throne following the death of his older brother, King Baudouin, in 1993. He was king for 20 years until he abdicated and lost immunity in 2013.
