Sudbury’s Scott Evans takes center stage with ‘Almost Love’ - Boston Herald

Scott Evans steps into his own spotlight with “Almost Love,” a romantic comedy about three couples – one gay, the others straight – and one, between a high school senior and his attractive tutor, “a not appropriate couple.”

At 36, Evans, out and proud and Chris Evans’ younger brother, demonstrates leading man appeal as a frustrated artist whose live-in boyfriend (Augustus Prew) has become a social media celebrity influencer.

“The best part of this movie in particular,” Evans said, “is that it doesn’t have to be qualified all the time as a ‘gay movie.’  It’s a relationship movie.  And the thing about relationships is everybody can relate to them.

“I’ve spent my whole life watching straight couples and I still learned about love.  It doesn’t necessarily matter who’s playing the part.”

“Almost Love,” he pointed out, doesn’t exactly follow the rom-com playbook.

“Most rom-com movies start with the couple meeting and then start with the trials and tribulations.  This one (begins) at the five-year mark and real life is happening. You don’t get to see the honeymoon phase.

“It deals with more of the issues surrounding relationships. What happens when things might become stagnant? What is the next step? Do we get married? Stay together? Are we friends?  Break up?

“It deals with all those things while still trying to have the comedy aspect to it.”

Evans came out when he was 19. For two years he was a gay cop on “One Life to Live” and on Netflix’s “Gracie and Frankie” he was a closeted gay man came who came out.  Does he feel typecast?

“For so long, for my whole life I didn’t have to but I lived in the closet,” he said.  “I remember at 18 years old — I graduated high school early and moved to New York — I asked myself, What do I want to do?

“I know it’s a tough business for gay people. Rupert Everett (‘My Best Friend’s Wedding’) came out and all of a sudden wasn’t getting jobs. I didn’t want to stay in the closet to get work.

“I wanted to be out whether it affected my career or not. I had to take it and run with it.

“Back then there weren’t the gay roles there are today. It’s nice we’re getting better representation.  So being typecast now?  To be a gay guy?  For sure. I am one, so why not?”

“Almost Love” is available on VOD and streaming platforms Friday
