'Love Is Quarantine' on Instagram Is the Bonkers 'Love Is Blind' Riff We Need Right Now - Decider

Necessity is the mother of invention, and if there’s anything we need in these trying times, it’s a new season of Love Is Blind. The Netflix reality romance series dominated pop culture convos during all of February (a.k.a. “simpler times”), but we’ve been left high and dry when it comes to new love-in-extreme-circumstances content. Thankfully, two madmen with Instagram accounts have come to the rescue with an unofficial (but every bit as gripping as the original) spinoff, Love Is Quarantine.

And yeah, it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like.

The project comes from Thi Q. Lam (@thiqlam) and Rance Nix (@rancenix), roommates living in Brooklyn. Before the pandemic, Lam spent his days creating content for food and drink startups, while Rance worked as an actor and in real estate. Love Is Quarantine, their new endeavor, mimics the dating process as closely as one can using Google Docs and phone calls as opposed to a soundstage converted into “dating pods.” It works like this: whoever (18+ only, please) wants to go on some randomly assigned blind dates signs up in a Google Doc, giving their name and phone number. Then Lam and Nix screen the applicants before “casting” the most up-for-it people and setting them up on dates.

The whole process is lightning fast, as they told Decider in a phone call. “We’ll text random people beforehand asking if they’re available,” said Lam. “This is very quick, so if they don’t reply, they’re passed and we go to someone else. Whoever replies, if they’re bubbly and entertaining and down for it, we put them in a pod.” Daters are encouraged to video themselves before, during, and after each phone call date, setting up their expectations and giving their takes on their prospective soul mate.

Lam and Nix got the idea to launch this ragtag romance revolution after finishing up Love Is Blind. “Being two extroverts, we were going a little stir crazy around the apartment thinking what can we do,” explained Nix. “Then Thi said, how about we make our own version of the show because being quarantined in an apartment is like being in a pod.” After making a Google Sheet for applicants, names and numbers started rolling in from all over the country and all over the world.

It’s a truly wild way to pass the time, but—and I can’t stress this enough—we are all bored. That’s what one contestant, Lydia, said before her blind date: “Being in a house is boring and this is different.” This is different, but it’s every bit as engrossing as Love Is Blind! Connections appear to be forming, fan favorites are emerging (Val and Red are early favorites, I guess? Is that a thing? It’s a thing now!), and the pods are full.

For a taste of what life is like in these virtual pods, here’s Hayley talking about her date with Roman. “Hayley” and “Roman”? Those are Love is Blind names, for sure!

And unlike the real Love Is Blind, we get a totally unfiltered look behind-the-scenes of Love Is Quarantine. Lam and Nix are the soul of the experience in a way that Vanessa and Nick Lachey never were. You can follow their exploits making the project via Insta-stories, while the videos from the hopeful love birds populate the Instagram feed. It’s half American Vandal, half Love Is Blind, all awesome.

The account’s easily blown up more than anyone expected. In under a day, the newly-formed Instagram account has accrued 2,000+ followers (and growing). Things are blowing up so much that “Nick Lachey” wants to use this project, which will ultimately include a website and merch, to raise money for Feeding America.

The next round of blind dates happens tonight, Wednesday March 18, starting at 8 p.m. ET. A whole new lineup of daters will be called, and all the couples from last night’s round will be revealed. There will even be some special appearances from mystery guests. “We might have some special guests, some musical acts, a halftime show,” said Lam. “Not even a local singer/songwriter down the street. I’m talking about somebody. Somebody.”

Sign up and if you get a phone call from a mysterious number, it might be Lam and Nix looking to set you up with a blind date! Nix explained that they’ll start reaching out to Season 2’s contestants around 7 p.m. ET and they’ll drop them in their pods around 7:30 p.m. ET, all before the festivities pop off on Instagram at 8 p.m. ET.

In the meantime, you can binge all of Love Is Blind on Netflix. And remember, as Nix said, this is for Mark. “#TeamMark. We’re doing this all for Mark.”
