“I generally am someone who is very straight to the point. Yes, I have a tough time getting there sometimes, but I will get there,” she said. “With the show, I was facing a really big obstacle and milestone because I’m getting married in a month and a half. I didn’t have the time to coax into it, so I had to figure it out by saying everything I was thinking—so I could know, clearheaded, ‘this is the person I’m going to marry and be with for the rest of my life, and there aren’t any more questions in my mind.’”
Though she was understandably nervous about what would happen when viewers saw that moment, Gibelli said that she’s glad to have started a conversation—even at the expense of revealing her own vulnerabilities. “I didn’t expect it to blow up as it did,” she explained. “I knew it was going to be a hot topic in the sense that it was something really personal. Not a lot of people get to know that intimate part of your life, you don’t really open up about that. So it was very emotional and disruptive, but in a good way.”
Gibelli’s relationship remained rocky as the season continued, reaching a breaking point in the finale—when Powers left his bride at the altar, revealing he couldn’t marry her with a very melodramatic “I don’t.” In the moments that followed, a visibly distraught Gibelli left the chapel and, in full bridal glamour, took a tumble down a small hill. (Talk about a rough day.) The moment may live on in internet history—but Gibelli, for one, has no regrets.
“I had a year and a half to prepare, and when I watched it back it felt honest and raw—there’s nothing in there I need to feel scared about. It’s just hard when it’s you,” she said. “These are the challenges and fears that I faced, so it was hard to watch it in that aspect because you’re just kind of an open wound.”
Thankfully, everything worked out in the end. Gibelli and Powers played coy about their current relationship status after the show became an overnight success—but on Thursday’s Love Is Blind reunion show, they revealed that they are still an item. “He has his own place, I have mine,” Giannina told hosts Nick and Vanessa Lachey. “We’re getting to know each other at our own pace.” What’s more, Gibelli understands why Powers did not initially go through with the wedding: “Looking back, I respect his decision,” Gibelli said during the reunion. “Where we are now is so right for us...[Getting rejected at the altar] hurt so much, but it’s about what can I do with that, what can I learn from that.”
We might never know if love is truly blind, but as Gibelli would surely tell you, it’s definitely resilient.
