Love makes a comeback in Newtown Township - News - Bucks County Courier Times

The township supervisors reversed a previous vote and unanimously approved a resolution recognizing the “Love is Love Day” Prom and its support of LGBTQ+ youth.

All we are saying, a long line of LGBTQ+ community members and their supporters told the Newtown Township supervisors, is give love a chance.

And board members listened, voting unanimously at Wednesday night’s meeting to reverse a previous decision and adopt a resolution that recognizes the “Love is Love Day” Prom and its support of LGBTQ youth in the Newtown Township community.

The Rainbow Room hosted the “Love is Love: A Queer Prom for All” Feb. 15 in Doylestown Borough.

After voting no on a previous draft of the resolution authored by supervisor John Mack, board members David Oxley, Phil Calabro and Kyle Davis joined Mack and Dennis Fisher to adopt the document for Newtown Township.

Mack made some revisions that satisfied the three supervisors’ concerns that the previous resolution might have been exclusionary by mentioning only the LGBTQ community and not other groups that suffer discrimination.

Unlike the previous resolution, the approved document does not set a specific Love is Love Day, but recognizes the Rainbow Room and its prom and adds “minority youth” when referencing the LGBTQ+ community.

“Newtown Township supports all youth and uplifts and celebrates LGBTQ+ minority youth in our community and the organizations that provide support to them during a time when they are the most vulnerable,” the approved resolution reads.

Calabro, Davis and Oxley all reiterated that their previous vote was not a sign of a lack of support for the LGBTQ community but simply reflected their concerns with wording in the previous resolution they felt was exclusionary.

Their change of heart and the resolution’s approval was applauded by several LGBTQ youth who spoke before the vote and their supporters, which included state Sen. Steve Santarsiero, D-10, of Lower Makefield.

Santarsiero pushed a similar resolution, with state Rep. Wendy Ullman, D-143, Plumstead, but it failed to make the floor in Harrisburg for a vote.

“All of us just want to be valued in the community,” said James Singel, a transgender student at Pennridge High School.

“This resolution was not exclusionary because I’ve been excluded all my life and know what it feels like,” said a student at Council Rock High School North in Newtown Township, who is gay. She declined to give her name.

“Straight people can kiss goodbye without a second thought, but when we do it we get looks of hate. I’ve experienced more hate than most of you have in your entire life.”

Added David Bria, Yardley council president and a gay man: “Discrimination still happens all the time and that is why we need messages of support like this.”
