Former Green Bay Packers first-round pick Jordan Love spent some time in the headlines this offseason, but it wasn't because of anything he did. Star signal-caller and reigning NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers had a very public spat with the franchise, and it appeared at one point that he would rather retire than play for the Packers again. That shifted attention to Love, who would have likely taken over at quarterback if Rodgers did call it quits.

Rodgers and the Packers were of course able to work out a deal, however, so Love will have to wait at least one more year before he gets his chance as the franchise quarterback. His first NFL action is coming up next Saturday, though, and it's something Love feels like he has been waiting his entire life for.

"I'm super excited for it," Love said, via NFL.com. "The last time I played a game was the Senior Bowl coming out of college. Over a year-and-a-half ago, I think. I'm super excited. This is the moment I've been preparing for ever since last year. It's almost like I've been training a year just for this first preseason game. I'm super excited to get out there and get back to playing ball."

It's wild to consider, but a second-year, first-round pick has not dressed for an NFL game yet -- in the preseason or regular season. The 2020 preseason was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and while the NFL was able to start and finish the regular season in a safe and successful manner, the Packers had Tim Boyle as Rodgers' active backup. So when Love was in Lambeau last year, he was in street clothes.

Next Saturday's matchup vs. the Houston Texans is important for Packers fans, because they will be getting their first look at the quarterback who will likely take over one day. During three years at Utah State, Love completed 61.2% of his passes for 8,600 yards, 60 touchdowns and 29 interceptions. He also rushed for 403 yards and nine touchdowns in 38 career games. Reports indicate Love has had both good and bad days in OTAs, but this preseason game will be his first real test.
