Anthology series have been around forever, but they've really increased in popularity over the last decade, becoming ideal projects for actors who might not want to sign a lengthy contract and writers who want to tell an open-and-shut season-long story. Last year, HBO Max joined the fray with the debut of its romantic comedy anthology series "Love Life," which was created by Sam Boyd and starred Anna Kendrick as a woman named Darby. The sweet first season tapped into the feel-good nature of all good rom-coms as it told the story of Darby's complicated love life from her first romance to her last.
As we wait to see what romantic adventures await in Season 2, which will feature a new main cast led by William Jackson Harper, we've been on a little journey of our own. We've gathered up everything there is to know about Season 2, including when it will likely debut. So, if you've been just as impatient as we have while waiting for the show to come back, here's everything we know so far about "Love Life" Season 2.
What is the release date for Love Life Season 2?
"Love Life" was one of the few original programs available to stream when HBO Max launched in May 2020, and thus it became the first original series to be renewed when it was picked up for Season 2 in June 2020. Since then, HBO Max has created several high-quality shows. All the while, we've waited for news of "Love Life's" next chapter. Luckily we finally have some news to share.
While the official premiere date hasn't been announced, WarnerMedia recently shared both HBO's and HBO Max's fall 2021 programming lineups, which ultimately revealed that "Love Life" is expected to return to the streaming service sooner rather than later, with new episodes debuting in October. And although it doesn't specify an exact date, we do know that HBO Max tends to release new episodes of its series on Thursdays, so make sure you don't make any big plans for the end of the week once October rolls around.
Who is in the cast of Love Life Season 2?
The cast of "Love Life" Season 2 is absolutely stacked with talent. Narrated by Keith David, the anthology show stars Emmy nominee William Jackson Harper ("The Good Place") as Marcus Watkins, a man who re-enters the dating scene following the end of a years-long relationship with Maya Kazan's Emily. As he attempts to find romantic fulfilment, we'll meet a lot of different people, including Jessica Williams' Mia Hines, who challenges Marcus' ideas of himself (via HBO Max). We'll also get to know Mia's parents, played by Kimberly Elise and Blair Underwood, and how they shaped her into the person she is today.
Elsewhere, Chris "Comedian CP" Powell portrays Yogi, a father of two who lives vicariously through Marcus' adventures in dating, while Punkie Johnson plays Marcus' outspoken sister, Ida, whom HBO describes as being willing to "say anything to anyone, often to hilarious effect."
Guest stars this season include Janet Hubert and John Earl Jelks as Marcus' parents, Donna and Kirby Watkins; Jordan Rock as Trae Lang, a writer who forces Marcus to re-evaluate his career in publishing; Steven Boyer as Josh, the entitled publisher at the company where Marcus works; Leslie Bibb as Becca Evans, a divorced mother with whom Marcus embarks on a sexual relationship; Arian Moayed as Kian Parsa, a tech millionaire and one of Marcus' best friends; and Ego Nwodim as Ola Adebayo, a playwright who attracts Marcus' attention (via HBO Max).
Also appearing in Season 2 are several actors from Season 1, including Anna Kendrick, Zoë Chao, Peter Vack, and Nick Thune.
What is the plot of Love Life Season 2?
The gist of "Love Life" is that it's a series that chronicles one person every season as they date and have sex while trying to find their idea of romantic happiness. In Season 2, William Jackson Harper's Marcus will be the star of the show after his marriage to the well-meaning Emily (Kazan), a woman he met in grad school, eventually comes to an end. When the series picks up, Marcus and Emily appear to have grown apart over the years, so Marcus will be dropped back into the deep end of the dating pool. As HBO Max put it, he'll be searching for "the romantic fulfillment that he thought he already found."
It's obvious based on what we know of the cast list that there's more to Marcus and his story than just his love life though. The show will also explore his career and his relationships with his friends and family on the way to finding the so-called "happily ever after."
