Talk about going out with a bang.
KISS — the iconic shock-rock, heavy-metal band known for its black-and-white face paint, elaborate costumes and stunning stage shows — will make a stop on its End of the Road World Tour at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Hollywood Casino Amphitheatre in Tinley Park.
You’ve been warned.
“The KISS End of the Road World Tour stage is by far the most sophisticated and technologically advanced shows we’ve ever put together,” said lead guitarist Tommy Thayer. “Our huge lighting pods are constantly moving and creating different dramatic effects; the design is almost Google-style.”
Packing in plenty of pyrotechnics and special effects, the band is pulling out all the stops for its swan song.
“During my guitar solo, I shoot rockets from the neck of my guitar destroying the pods, and people go crazy,” Thayer said. “There’s not another show out there that competes. We’re playing songs from all eras of KISS to give fans a taste of all the classic tunes.”
Established in 1973, the hard-rock band has become one of the bestselling of all time (with more than 75 million records sold worldwide) and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2014. In addition to Thayer, its current lineup includes Paul Stanley on rhythm guitar, Gene Simmons on bass guitar and Eric Singer on drums.
While KISS rocks hard, it rocks its distinctive style even harder. Some of the band’s trademarks are its over-the-top makeup and costume designs, with each member performing as a different persona. This final tour features the band’s original four characters: the Starchild, the Demon, the Spaceman and the Catman.
“When we come out onstage you see fans in makeup and dressed up just like us; it’s a tribal experience,” said Thayer, who joined the band in the Spaceman role in 2002.
“I grew up in Portland, Oregon, in the early ’70s, and wanted to emulate the hard-rock bands of that era — I wanted to learn to play those songs and look like those bands,” he said. “I never aspired to be a rock star per se; I just had a passion for the look, the songs and the electric guitars.”
And now he’s toured the world with KISS for nearly two decades.
“It’s an honor to be in KISS, and I know that sounds like a cliché, but it’s true — all four of us feel that way,” Thayer said. “We highly respect the fact that we’re entrusted to carry out the KISS legacy. I’m living every kid’s dream of playing lead guitar in one of the biggest, most bad-ass bands on the planet.”
Of course, any group with such an extensive history has the challenge of entertaining long-haulers as well as newbies.
“The trick is to satisfy the old-guard fans as well as the younger, and even first-time people seeing KISS for the first — and last — time,” Thayer said. “The beauty of KISS is it’s timeless. The imagery, the outfits, the boots, the makeup have all stood the test of time, almost five decades now, and at this point are iconic.”
So, is this tour really the end of the road?
“Yes, this is a shoutout to everyone — this is your last chance to see us — and if you’ve been living under a rock for 50 years and have never seen KISS on tour, this is your absolute last opportunity,” he said.
The band plays each show like it’s the grand finale.
“Our goal each night is for the audience to walk away pummeled, exhilarated and exhausted, knowing that they just witnessed the greatest rock ’n’ roll show on earth,” he said.
