Like many couples in New York City, Fiona Luo and Michael Smith don’t necessarily run in the same circles. Luo, 22, works as a fashion publicist at Gia Kuan Consulting, with clients like Telfar, Bond Hardware, and Susan Alexandra. Born in Beijing, China, she moved to the city in 2016 to study at Parsons School of Design on a scholarship. Smith, 27, grew up in a tiny farm town in Arizona and is a data science analyst for an advertising company. Differences aside, the two have been dating—on and off—for three years. It all started with a Rick Owens fan account.
Back in 2018, Luo was browsing the Instagram account @meninrickowens, a trove of lanky dudes who love the Dark Lord of Fashion. One guy caught Luo’s eye. “I think it was a blazer, tank top, drop-crotch pants, and leather boots,” Luo says of the outfit that made her press “follow” on Smith’s page. “There are so many different Rick silhouettes but it seemed like he was into the same ones that I like.” The two began bantering about Rick Owens, platonically at first. “I DM’d her, but she followed me, so we are both guilty. I was genuinely talking about this jewelry company that she works for, Bond Hardware,” says Smith. “Also, she’s a hot girl!”
