Loki & Sylvie's Finale Kiss Was Genuine, Says Director - Screen Rant

Loki director Kate Herron says the kiss between Loki and Sylvie in the finale was actually genuine. The acclaimed series finished its 6 episode run on a high note, leaving many tantalizing questions to be answered in Season 2 (as well as the wider MCU in Phase 4). Whether or not Loki and Sylvie still have a future together is among those cliffhangers.

When Loki first met Sylvie in the second episode of the series, it seemed clear that they had some kind of connection, beyond being variants of one-another. After their apocalyptic adventure on Lamentis, even the TVA knew that the connection was romantic. By the time of the finale, those feelings seemed clear to both Loki and Sylvie, though she could not let go of her anger at He Who Remains, forcing her to send Loki back to the TVA so she could kill the man who ruined her life. Many viewers were left wondering whether the kiss the pair shared right before she sent Loki away actually meant something, or if she was had just used it to position herself to grab the temp-pad.

In an interview with THR, Herron stated she believes the kiss between Loki and Sylvie in the finale was actually genuine. In Herron’s mind, she saw it as “her [Sylvie's] feelings were genuine and that it was a goodbye.” Feel free to read her full thoughts on the passionate moment below:

"Honestly, the way I always read that kiss is that her feelings were genuine and that it was a goodbye. Sylvie is sort of where our Loki was in Thor. She’s driven by revenge, pain and anger, and that’s what he’s saying to her. He’s like, “I’ve been where you are, and I just want you to be OK. You’re not going to get what you want.” But she’s not there yet. On her journey of self-healing, she’s not where he is. So she’s not going to see it that way. So there was a sense that she was turning to get the TemPad, but I don’t think it meant the kiss wasn’t genuine. In my head, it was always a horrible goodbye, really, but the feelings were real."

Herron would know better than most what is really going on in Loki, having directed every episode of the series. In doing so she worked very closely with all the actors, and knew ahead of everyone else the ultimate culmination of the story she wanted to tell. If Herron believes the feelings between Loki and Sylvie were authentic, then it is more or less canon for the series. Since Herron states the pair's relationship was real, it makes the finale all the more tragic on a character level for Loki. As Lady Sif taunted in the time loop prison, Loki is really meant to be alone.

Now that Loki season 2 is officially confirmed, though without Herron onboard (she felt she had already told the story she signed up for), one may wonder how things will change with someone else running the show. A new show runner might decide on a different direction for Loki and Sylvie where it was a con all along, which in all honesty would be fitting for their characters. Regardless, after the major MCU changes that season 1 began, it will be interesting to what the variant pair decide to do in the second season.
