K-pop boy group Monsta X released their latest new single "Kiss or Death" along with the music video for the track on Monday.
A preview of the song and music video, which was released via Universe, a new Korean mobile app and web platform, was unveiled at 6 p.m. KST on Monday on the Universe YouTube channel.
The full version of the music video was released exclusively via the Universe app, according to South Korea's The Dong A Ilbo and other local media.
The latest song is available for download on various music platforms, including Apple Music and Spotify, according to the Universe Twitter account.
The new tune begins with arresting bass lines, accompanied by a powerful rap sequence by Joohoney and I.M, before crossing over to a catchy pop song melody.
The video has a cinematic feel, taking place aboard a dark moving train before later transitioning to a futuristic spaceship setting.
The video's time travel theme will remind viewers of the band's previous 2017 EP The Code, which also sported a time travel theme (particularly the music video for the album's title track "Dramarama"), as well as their 2018 EP The Connect (for which they previously released a music film that also features a moving train setting).
The official Twitter account of Monsta X tweeted a message Monday (signed off with a hashtag spelling out Joohoney's name in Korean) asking: "Monbebe [the collective name for fans of Monsta X] How was Kiss or Death? Have we ripped it?? #주헌," along with images of Joohoney.
The new music video for "Kiss or Death" also features Shownu, the band's leader who last week officially enlisted in the military in South Korea, where national service is mandatory for all men.
The release of "Kiss or Death" follows the group's latest album One of a Kind, the band's ninth EP, which was released on June 1, featuring the title track "Gambler."
The Korea Joongang Daily reported on June 11 that "Gambler" had entered the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart at fifth place, with two other tracks from the same EP ("Addicted" and "Secrets") ranking 11th and 12th, respectively, on the Billboard chart at the time.
Forbes reported on June 13 that Monsta X dominated the Billboard World Digital Song Sales Chart that week, with all seven tracks from their One of a Kind EP claiming a spot in the chart that week.
The band, which consists of six members, has gained much international success, including in the U.S. after their appearances on major American television shows, such as Good Morning America, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Monsta X was the first K-pop band to perform at a major music festival in the U.S., following their performance at the Life Is Beautiful Music & Art Festival in Las Vegas. On the same day, they became the first K-pop group to perform at the iHeartRadio Music Festival.
In 2020, Monsta X released their first all-English album, All About Luv. They have released songs in collaboration with other American artists including French Montana and will.i.am.
