Murphy's law of love - Midland Daily News

Greetings, dear reader, I write you with a new member of the Midland Daily News and Hessling Household.

His name is Murphy, and he comes from Half Way Home Animal Rescue.

“Well, that was fast,” you may be thinking.

Yes, yes it was.

Sometimes that’s how life happens. One minute I was moping around the house six days after our old dog died, and before I knew it, I was packing up the family to check out an adoption expo that was held a couple weekends back in Midland.

My mom actually contacted me about the event, after I sent her countless messages bemoaning the fact that our house was depressingly quiet without a dog in our lives. Mom encouraged my family to “just check it out.” So we left our home that Sunday morning as a family of three and returned with Murphy in tow.

Honestly, if he didn’t come with the name Murphy, we would have named him Kismet, because it just seemed destined that this little guy would make us a family of four.

That comforting sense of love that can only come from four-legged family members is about the only thing Murphy has in common with our old dog. He seems much more inquisitive and playful, which could be because he is nearly a decade younger than our old Sassy girl.

A corgi/chihuahua mix, Murphy is a majestic little guy who has made a couple appearances at our Midland Daily News office in downtown, charming our ad reps and newsroom personnel alike. He’s still learning the ground rules of working in a newsroom, so his visits so far have been on a weekly basis. I think we all agree that once he gets his bearings, he’s going to be quite the shop dog.

I’d like to thank all our readers who sent words of support and condolences after we lost our dear Sassy. As one friend put it, there are few things more spiritually, emotionally fulfilling than loving, and being loved by, a dog.

Sassy gave our family unconditional love and support during these most trying times of our lives, and we will never be able to replace her. In fact, even with Murphy’s boundless energy and optimism, I still find grief sneaking up on me here and there like a punch in the stomach, reminding me my old best friend is gone. But Murphy has been a comfort, and he’s brought so much new joy into our home and newsroom.

American wildlife photographer and writer Roger A. Caras once said: “Dogs have given us their absolute all. We are the center of their universe. We are the focus of their love and faith and trust. They serve us in return for table scraps. It is without a doubt the best deal man has ever made.”

Murphy and I wholeheartedly agree.
