Austin Love was the Tar Heel first off of the board after the St. Louis Cardinals selected him with the 90th overall pick in the third round. Caleb Roberts was selected with the 138th overall pick in the fifth round by the Arizona Diamondbacks before the Cincinnati Reds selected Justice Thompson with the 180th overall pick in the sixth round.
The draft picks mark the 44th straight season to see a Tar Heel be taken in the MLB Draft and the first in the Scott Forbes' era.
Love finished the 2021 season with 129 strikeouts, which ranks second all-time in North Carolina history behind Andrew Miller (current Cardinals pitcher), who collected 133 in 2006.
The selection marks the second time in five years the Cardinals have drafted a Tar Heels pitcher in the third round after St. Louis took Zac Gallen in 2016.
Love, a First Team All-ACC selection, became the eighth Tar Heel pitcher to earn first-team honors since 1999. He joined Daniel Bard, Robert Woodard, Miller, Alex White, Matt Harvey, Kent Emanuel, and J.B. Bukauskas.
The Salisbury, N.C. native was electric in 2021 and turned in four performances in which he pitched six-plus innings and recorded 10-plus strikeouts.
The ACC's leader in innings pitched (102.0), Love ranked second in strikeouts (129) and eighth in opposing batting average (.224).
Love's season was highlighted by a terrific performance against Georgia Tech on May 20, which yielded 9.0 innings, 15 strikeouts, two runs, eight hits, and zero walks.
It was his second complete game of the season after he went the distance on May 14, 2021 against Louisville.
Love emerged in the college baseball scene after dominating out of the bullpen as a freshman in 2019.
He led the team in wins after going 8-4 in his first competitive season in Chapel Hill. Primarily used out of the bullpen, he was one of the best relievers in the ACC and saved some of his best performances for the postseason. He set a season-high in innings pitched and strikeouts against Miami in the ACC Championship after throwing 6.1 innings out of the bullpen and striking out six Hurricanes batters.
In his final outing of the year, Love came out of the bullpen to throw 4.2 innings of shutout baseball in an elimination game against Auburn, tying his season-high with six strikeouts to force a game three in the Chapel Hill Super Regional.
Roberts, the second Tar Heel off of the board, was selected in the fifth round (138th overall) by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The Coral Springs, Fla., native wrapped up a three-year career in Carolina Blue, where he turned in a career 86 hits, 15 doubles, 10 home runs and 36 RBI.
He started 55 games in right field for the Tar Heels in 2021 and led Carolina with 10 home runs. His 36 RBI ranked second on the squad and his .270 batting average finished as third-best on the roster.
Roberts' power was on full display against Pittsburgh on April 18 when he blasted a pair of home runs in a 10-9 win. Patient at the plate, he drew a team-high 44 walks and struck out just 41 times.
Thompson, a Second Team All-ACC selection in 2021, started 54 of the Tar Heels' 55 games in centerfield and was consistently one of the league's top defenders in Chapel Hill.
He finished his lone season in Chapel Hill with a .304 average with 63 hits, eight doubles, seven home runs, and 25 RBI.
A true five-tool player, Thompson robbed a pair of home runs and displayed a defensive prowess all season that included numerous run-saving catches and committed just two errors in the field (.985 fld %). In 54 games and 207 at-bats, he slugged .444 and claimed a .386 on-base percentage. He tied for fourth in the ACC in stolen bases, swiping 15 bags in 17 attempts.
The 2021 MLB draft wraps up tomorrow with the final 10 rounds, which begin at noon on MLB.com.
