Love Ignites: Iowa Revival Weekend Brings Companion Dioceses from Around the World Together in Worship - Episcopal News Service

Join Presiding Bishop Michael Curry, Bishop Alan Scarfe, and the Diocese of Iowa for REVIVAL 2021: Love Ignites! — a weekend of worship, conversation, and prayer. The virtual worship service on Friday, July 23 at 7 p.m. CT includes beautiful music and powerful testimonies from across the Diocese of Iowa and from Iowa’s companion dioceses of Brechin in Scotland, Swaziland in Eswatini, and Nzara in South Sudan. A prayer line will be available during the weekend, with chaplains ready to pray with and listen to those who call in English, Spanish, Dinka, and Arabic. The service will be primarily in English, with different parts of the service in other languages, and Spanish subtitles available. There will also be a version available with on-screen captions in Dinka.

“Revivals are times for us to thank God and to give witness to the story of God’s love in our lives,” said Bishop Alan Scarfe. “It is a fitting way to pray ourselves towards the discerning of a new bishop at our Episcopal election a week later, and to recommit ourselves to the Spirit of God for the days of mission ahead together.”

One of the gifts of the pandemic has been that the Diocese of Iowa has been able to continue to deepen the companion relationships with Brechin, Swaziland, and Nzara. Previously those relationships involved small groups of people traveling to each other’s dioceses. Using Zoom during the pandemic opened the dioceses up to more chances to worship together, study together, and learn from each other. Including all 4 companion dioceses in this service of revival seemed like a natural way to celebrate those relationships.

On Saturday, July 24 at 10:00am CT, the Revival weekend continues with conversation via Zoom with Presiding Bishop Curry, hosted by Bishop Scarfe. In three sections, different leaders will engage Curry on the loving, liberating, and life-giving way of Jesus and how that impacts sharing God’s love with others, our relationships across difference, and our care of God’s creation. The Saturday morning conversation will offer simultaneous interpretation in Spanish, Dinka, and sign language.

Prayer has surrounded the individual and corporate preparations for REVIVAL 2021: Love Ignites! Members of the diocese have been invited to 40 Days of Prayer leading up to the weekend, each day with a simple prayer prompt and action. Following the revival, all are welcome to join the diocese in prayer leading to the Special Convention for the Election of the 10th Bishop of Iowa, to be held in Des Moines on July 31, by joining in Compline services July 25-30 at 8:00pm CT, led by a different congregation in the diocese each evening.

The worship service will be streamed on the Diocese of Iowa’s Facebook page and YouTube channel. Learn more about Iowa’s REVIVAL 2021: Love Ignites! weekend at https://www.iowaepiscopal.org/revival
