We are about three weeks away from the 2021 NBA Draft and it seems that we may already be able to say who the Cleveland Cavaliers plan on taking.
A report from Evan Dammarell of Fear The Sword states that Jalen Green has “received a promise” from a team, according to a few sources. With Cade Cunningham being the likely first overall pick, that would leave the Houston Rockets as the potential team to give Green a promise, it would appear.
We can’t say for certain of course, but it’d seem that could be the case, as Houston has been rumored to potentially favor Green’s shot creation and scoring over Mobley, based on a report from Jonathan Givony of ESPN (subscription required).
Essentially, the Cavaliers should be preparing to select Evan Mobley, unless whichever team made this promise is using it as a smokescreen. A Mobley selection in that case would raise some questions regarding fit and corresponding moves to maximize his potential.
The idea of an Evan Mobley-Jarrett Allen frontcourt is enticing but the spacing with that duo alongside someone like Isaac Okoro is worrisome and seeing how poor the offense was this season, the Cavaliers should be looking to improve the spacing.
With this in mind, the ideal situation regarding Mobley would be to slowly bring him in, having him be the team’s backup center a bunch, as KJG’s Justin Brownlow also suggested. Despite his slight frame, Mobley’s shot-blocking ability on defense and his unicorn-like offensive game should make him a mismatch against backup bigs and once his shooting comes around, then the team could unleash the Mobley-Allen duo.
With all of that in mind, who would be the best Cavs player to pair along with Mobley in the frontcourt?
Considering how effective Mobley can be in the mid-post, using his footwork and athleticism to beat his opponents, the Cavs should try to have floor spacers around him. Funny enough, despite what rumors may suggest, it may be better for the front office to hold on to Kevin Love as he fits what the team needs.
Going into next season, Love will have two years left on his deal, totaling about $60 million. Considering his age and injury history, it is to be seen how effective he can be.
Love’s time with the Cavaliers during the rebuild has been very up and down, with on-court challenges and rumors circulating often. Considering his contract, if the Cavs wanted to move on from him, it would more than likely be through a buyout.
There may be some optimism for Love on the team however, as Love discussed how he hadn’t been good enough for the organization and how playing for Team USA should be helpful to continue where he left off at season’s end, via Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com.
When healthy, Love is still a player who can stretch the floor, rebound efficiently, make plays for others and be a safety blanket for the team.
So what would a Mobley-Love frontcourt look like for the Cavs?
A Love-Mobley frontcourt would be one that’s played in spurts.
Seeing as Darius Garland is someone who uses the lob throwing ability to his advantage, having Mobley with spacing allows for lobs and more paint touches to the USC big man as opposed to being reserved to a perimeter role alongside someone like Jarrett Allen.
Defensively, the interior defense wouldn’t weaken as much, if at all, with Mobley at the center spot instead of Allen due to Mobley’s shot-blocking ability paired with his low foul rate; Mobley had 2.9 blocks per contest in his lone collegiate season at USC. Also, with how fluid Mobley is, his switchability would improve the team’s pick-and-roll defense.
A lineup of Garland-Collin Sexton-Okoro-Love-Mobley would be one that should get a lot of run next season, depending on specific matchups.
I would expect this lineup to be an effective one both on offense and defense and this should be one that Cavs head coach J.B. Bickerstaff could get creative with, in the event Mobley is selected by the Cavaliers in the 2021 NBA Draft.
