Love and Monsters: Dylan O'Brien avoids giant beasts in first trailer for creature feature rom-com - SYFY WIRE

Mixing the creature feature sensibilities of A Quiet Place with the rom-com/horror subversion of Warm Bodies, the first trailer for Paramount's Love and Monsters has stomped online. And what the heck, let's throw some Zombieland and Cloverfield into the mix, too! It looks to be a piece of light-hearted escapism that inadvertantly has its finger on the pulse of our current predicament in which everyday life has been interrupted by a foreign and deadly organism.

Set in a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by giant beasties, the genre-mashing film is swapping its original theatrical plans for a PVOD release next month. The Maze Runner's Dylan O'Brien stars as Joel Dawson, one of the surviving humans driven deep underground when the monsters attacked. Years later, he braves the behemoth-infested surface to find his high school sweetheart Aimee (Iron Fist's Jessica Henwick). On the journey, the hero and his canine companion meet up with two irreverent survivalists played by Michael Rooker (The Suicide Squad) and Ariana Greenblatt (Avengers: Infinity War).

Check out the trailer, which rocks to the beat of The Kinks' "You Really Got Me," below:

Originally titled "Monster Problems," the PG-13 movie was directed by Michael Matthews (Five Fingers For Marseilles). Brian Duffield (Insurgent) and Matthew Robinson (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) penned the script based on a story by Duffield. Shawn Levy and Dan Cohen of 21 Laps (Arrival, Stranger Things) and John Starke (Sicario, Deadpool) serve as producers.

"Given the demand for new, high-quality entertainment right now, Paramount has decided to release Love and Monsters widely on digital platforms,” Paramount COO Andrew Gumpert said last month. "While we eagerly look forward to the reopening of movie theaters, we wanted to make this original and imaginative film available for everyone to enjoy at home."

Love and Monsters will bring the monstrous fun to PVOD platforms (Apple TV, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, FandangoNow, Google Play, Xfinity and, more) Friday, Oct. 16. The rental option (lasting for a period of 48 hours) is $19.99, while the permanent purchase costs $24.99.
