The successful show The Vampire Diaries focused on both the dramatic and romantic aspects of the main characters' lives. Even though Elena Gilbert, the Salvatore brothers, and their friends and enemies had their hands full and faced many obstacles, they still found time for romance. Some of these relationships were short-lived since they proved to be a wrong match in the end.
Others, however, lasted for a long time - until one of the couple or both died. The show also saw its fair share of love scenes and romantic moments in which the heroes professed their affection for one another. And as such, it also has plenty of amazing kisses.
10 The Illusion
Katherine and Stefan had a long and complicated relationship. First, he believed he was in love with her, then he hated her once he became a vampire. Especially when Katherine came back into his life.
And then they rekindled their old romance briefly but Katherine died. However, before that happened, there was a rather steamy makeout scene in the tomb. So why doesn't it score higher? Well, because it wasn't real. Katherine just toyed with Stefan's mind while he was sleeping. Still, in the illusion she created, it looked like they were both enjoying the moment.
9 Kiss Or Kill
Speaking of steamy scenes, this one also showed the passion between Katherine and Damon flowing. It ranks higher than the previous one because it actually happened in real life, and not just in anyone's head. Damon and Katherine seemed destined to end up fighting but they made out instead.
So why didn't it score a better position? Well, Katherine ruined the moment by breaking Damon's heart once again when she confessed she never truly loved him - said it was always Stefan who was her real love. Ouch.
8 The Good Old 20s
It'd be natural to forget that Stefan also had girlfriends who didn't have Elena's, or, really, Katherine's face. One of them was Rebekah, and at the time they dated, it seemed rather serious.
It was during the 1920s when Stefan, Klaus, and Rebekah were enjoying their freedom, roaming around and drinking freely. But they were later forced to part ways when Klaus supressed Stefan's memories of their time together.
7 The Surprise Kiss
While Elena and Elijah never got together - no matter how much some fans shipped them - they still shared a rather funny kiss. When Elena went investigating who Katherine was supposed to meet, she never expected to see Elijah.
And she expected that he would kiss her even less. Elena's astonishment is palpable in the scene, which makes it hilarious. Elijah then quickly realizes he's speaking to Elena and not Katherine.
6 Singing Scene
Caroline and Matt were a couple that wasn't meant to last but that doesn't change the fact that they looked cute together. And even after they separated, they still remained good friends.
They shared multiple kisses on the show but one of the best was when Caroline decided to express her love for Matt by singing the song 'Eternal Flame' for him. Matt hesitated at first but he then marched on the stage and kissed her - just like in a proper romantic comedy.
5 The Sad Reunion
Even though Anna was a vampire - a fact she conveniently forgot to mention to Jeremy when they first met - their love for the other seemed genuine.
Anna later died, courtesy of John Gilbert, and when she temporarily came back as ghost, the two rekindled their relationship. Jeremy was dating Bonnie at the time but he still wanted to be with Anna and he gave her a goodbye kiss in one of the saddest scenes of the show.
4 The Forest Fling
Caroline and Klaus were the one couple so many fans wanted to become real - but, unfortunately, it never did. Even though Klaus liked Caroline and she returned the feeling, the timing was all wrong.
Still, they at least got to spend one night together when they met in the forest. Caroline struggled with whether to give in or not but in the end, she chose to kiss Klaus, and then it went on from there. What's more, by her own admission later, she was surprised by how good the kiss felt.
3 Right Face, Wrong Person
Even before Damon and Elena got together, he was already in love with her - and he wasn't afraid to show it. In the 22nd episode of the first season, Damon met Elena in front of her house, and after a short talk they shared a passionate kiss.
But as it later turned out, it was actually Katherine whom Damon kissed, as he mistook her for Elena. The kiss showed once and for all that there was some serious chemistry going on between the two.
2 The First Kiss
While they both ended up with different people in the end - Stefan with Caroline, Elena with Damon - it was this couple that kickstarted the whole series and they deserve a nod on this list.
Stefan and Elena kissed fairly early at the beginning of the show. It happened only in the second episode and their first kiss was perfect - slow, romantic, and natural. It's also interesting to compare it with the first official kiss between Elena and Damon (see below).
1 In The Rain
Damon and Elena had a long and complicated road ahead of them when they first - officially - met. Elena liked Stefan at the time and Damon wasn't at his best behavior, to put it mildly.
He tried to compel Elena to kiss him but thanks to the vervain Stefan gave her, Elena didn't give in and she slapped Damon instead. But as time progressed, the two grew closer and Elena finally confessed her feelings when she kissed Damon in the rain. It couldn't have been overly comfortable but neither Elena nor Damon looked like they minded.
