During the COVID-19 pandemic, we are constantly reminded of the importance of developing a vaccine that can provide us with immunity to the coronavirus. I think at times we want to treat Love as a vaccine, thinking that we can inject a little of it into our lives and be inoculated against hate.
Wilbur Rees once wrote “I would like to buy $3 worth of God, please…(but) not enough to make me love a foreigner or pick beets with a migrant worker.”
Love that is strong enough to overcome the pandemics of racism, systemic injustice and hate must be more than a token vaccine. Genuine love requires us to be “all in” to love, as the Judeo-Christian Scriptures say, with all our heart and soul and mind and strength. Join the Community Campaign for Love (cc4love.org) and help build the Beloved Community for us all. THAT is what Love looks like.
Rev. Suzi Harriff, an American Baptist Pastor and Music Minister, serves churches in Syracuse, Otter Lake and Rwanda, and teaches at Bethel Bible Institute and Northeastern Seminary.
