It was like a fairy-tale come true, when a kiss awakens the princess.

Costa Mesa High football coach Jimmy Nolan coach wrote on his Facebook page that his wife, Taran, had surgery Tuesday morning. She and three of their four children on Sept. 10 in South Carolina were involved in a car collision that left two people dead, the Nolans’ youngest daughter Micki and the driver of the other vehicle Glendora Holmes.

Taran suffered significant injuries in the accident. Swelling had to subside before spinal surgery could happen.

Nolan wrote: “7pm was told surgery was approaching (that could mean 7:15pm or 1am) …gave Tar kiss and went to neuro icu (neurological intensive care unit) lobby. Did some pacing. Paced some more.”

Six hours later Nolan got to see his wife.

“Tar was heavily sedated,” he wrote. “I left (the) lobby, so I wouldn’t get in their way. Paced until I thought her meds might wear off. Went back in about 4:15am, with a bad feeling … she was out.”

And then: “I leaned over to give her a real light kiss (not to wake her) ~ Her eyes immediately popped wide open and she smiled!”

The Nolan children who survived the crash, son Jimmy and daughter Daisy, were released from hospital care days ago although Jimmy had to return for stomach surgery. Jimmy since was released again.

A GoFundMe page has  raised more than $350,000 for the Nolans.

Seeing Taran awake and smiling gave Nolan an emotional lift, he wrote.

“Horrible day or two turned beautiful,” he wrote. “Wife is life. We got this. VICTORY.”
