Perhaps the most sublime passage about love in the Christian Bible is 1 Corinthians, Chapter 13, which concludes with St. Paul’s words, “And now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; and the greatest of these is love.” Despite all the great things we might do, he says, without love, “I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.”
All around us we hear the noisy gongs and clanging cymbals of hate and division, chaos and confusion. Created in the image of God, we have all we need to aim our lives, alone and together, in the direction of love. We can live in the assurance of God’s love for us, so that we may be instruments of God’s peace – sowing love where there is hate and fear, forgiveness where there is hurt, making one where there is strife.
We need each other to help us keep our aim straight.
