CNY Inspirations: Love looks like this - syracuse.com

This feature is coordinated by The Post-Standard/Syracuse.com and InterFaith Works of CNY. Follow this theme and author posted Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday.

Perhaps you’ve seen recent billboards asking, “What does Love look like?” It’s the beginning of the Community Campaign for Love, a program of InterFaith Works of Central New York that aims to highlight and celebrate Love in Action throughout our community, in all of its glorious diversity, and to proclaim that Love looks like each and all of us.

On Sept. 13 at 3 at Apostolic Church, 347 Cortland Ave. in Syracuse, we will officially inaugurate this two-year initiative with the goal of lifting up acts of love, generosity and grace throughout our community, by individuals, faith communities, service organizations and not-for-profits.

We want our community to be able to hold up mirrors for each other and say to each other, “Do you see yourself? This is what Love looks like.” And we can only do that when we first look at ourselves in the mirror and are certain we can say, “Yes, that’s what Love looks like.” And if we find ourselves unable to do that with honesty and integrity, it’s an opportunity for us to look into our own heart, soul and mind, and work to transform ourselves before seeking to transform others.

Jesus once asked, “Why are you worrying about a speck in another’s eye when you have a log in your own?” We are certainly aware of the “logs” of prejudice, injustice, hate and fearmongering that are built into the structure of our society. We may not be as aware of them when they are built into us. St. Teresa of Avila challenges us to remember that ours “are the eyes through which to look out with Christ’s compassion to the world.” We can’t do that without removing the prejudice, resentment, selfishness and fear that block our vision. Only when we see with the eyes of Love can we see that Love looks like us.

Rev. Suzi Harriff, an American Baptist Pastor and Music Minister, serves churches in Syracuse, Otter Lake and Rwanda, and teaches at Bethel Bible Institute and Northeastern Seminary.
