Love the Boot this Earth Day - Daily Advertiser

Earth Day is coming up on April 22 and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the event. Over the years, activities have spread out to where April is recognized as Earth Month.

This year, the organization Keep Louisiana Beautiful created Love the Boot Week to coincide with Earth Day. It was scheduled to be held April 20-26, with clean-up and beautification events planned throughout the state.

“Love the Boot Week is Louisiana’s unique way to engage all citizens to show love and respect for their home, city, parish and state,” said Casey Rudolph, development and communications manager for Keep Louisiana Beautiful.

However, with the stay-at-home orders and health guidelines in place, all physical events for Love the Boot Week have been canceled. Keep Louisiana Beautiful is still keeping the momentum going by launching online and virtual activities to help everyone feel connected to one another and our communities.

Casey said, “In lieu of the canceled live events, Keep Louisiana Beautiful invites you to join the Love the Boot conversation on social media and on our website where we will give tips on things individuals and families can do during this time of social distancing to clean and beautify their space.”

They’ve also shared some ways you can celebrate Earth Day and Love the Boot Week while practicing social distancing:

  • Get some fresh air and pick up litter on an afternoon stroll around your neighborhood. Fresh air and sun will help boost your mood and picking up litter will improve the appearance of your neighborhood. Remember to take precautions like wiping down the litter grabber afterwards, immediately washing reusable garden gloves, not touching your face, keeping social distancing and washing hands afterwards.
  • Teach your kids the importance of caring for their community. Download Rocksey’s Toolbox, the state’s K-5th grade environmental education lessons aimed at teaching children important environmental issues that face Louisiana such as litter, pollution, recycling, protecting our waterways and citizenship.
  • Start a herb garden. Fill your windowsill or patio garden with your most commonly used herbs. In addition, you can regrow store-bought foods, like green onions or lettuce, in containers on your windowsill.
  • Bring reusable bags to the grocery store for your shopping trips. Plastic bags take 500 years (or more!) to degrade in the landfill and cannot be recycled. Wash them afterwards before using again.
  • As you support restaurants by picking up food to go, reduce additional waste by declining complimentary napkins, straws and plastic ware. Make the request when placing your order.
  • Declutter your living space and donate goods to thrift stores. Call the thrift store to make sure they are accepting donations first, or save the donations for later this year.
  • Start a compost bin.
  • Always use a reusable bottle and reduce your single-use plastic bottle waste. A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and 80% never get recycled.
  • Be conscious of your water use. Use a rain barrel to collect rainwater for your garden and landscaping. Because rainwater isn’t treated with chemicals like tap water, it’s better for your plants.
  • This one is great for children to do: Make a birdhouse with items from around the house such as an empty milk jug. Birdhouses provide a safe place for birds to build a nest and protect them from the elements and predators.
  • Go outside and play! Spending time outdoors, especially in green spaces, is one of the fastest ways to improve your health and happiness.

It’s important to stay safe and healthy, and these ideas can help pass the time at home and celebrate Earth Month. Don’t forget to share photos of your Louisiana on social media with the hashtag #LoveTheBoot!
