I write this letter to challenge all to give a little extra love to our planet. As we are all dealing with this current pandemic, some of us are finding ourselves with precious time to take a breath, giving us the opportunity to walk our neighborhoods and stay more engaged with our physical surroundings. Unfortunately, I’m sure each and every one of you has noticed the amount of trash that lines our streets and neighborhoods while spending more time outside.
This challenge is for all communities; renters, homeowners and business owners to take time to walk 100 yards in all directions and pick up the trash that you see. You can bring family members to help or work with your neighbors on a collective project while keeping your distance. Older students can use this as a service learning requirement, elementary students can do this as a science project, and younger children can make a game of it.
If we all take a moment out of our day and pick up the trash, what a beautiful neighborhood you would be helping to maintain. To those privileged enough to be working from home or to be safe at home, this could double as a thank you to community members that may be working essential jobs, like our health care workers, mail carriers, grocers, sanitation workers, gas attendants, food service workers, and other friends that are working to keep us fed, safe, and healthy.
It is just a small amount of time and effort to create a clean neighborhood we can all be proud of. What better time to start a new tradition than now, when we have the time to take a moment from our busy work, school, commitments, and schedules we normally face on a daily basis.
Although the pandemic is a horrible time for all, we can create beautiful clean neighborhoods if each of us does a small part as we practice social distancing and staying home. Let’s all celebrate Earth Day this year, and every year here after, by taking the time to pick up the trash in our own neighborhoods so we can take pride in where we live, play and raise our families.
Thank you and Happy Earth Day
