Every Alternate Scenario In Love Wedding Repeat | Screen Rant - Screen Rant

The romantic comedy Love Wedding Repeat suggests that love is a game of chance, depicting alternate scenarios of the same event: the wedding where Jack could succeed in romance with his crush, Dina. The Netflix Original movie was written and directed by English filmmaker Dean Craig in his feature directorial debut and is starring a mostly English cast. The film is Happy Death Day  meets Wedding Crashers: different catastrophic versions of the same wedding day are presented in an attempt to answer the question “What if things had transpired differently?”

The theme of Love Wedding Repeat is comically and succinctly expressed in the film’s opening narration by The Oracle (voiced by Penny Ryder): “A wise person once said about love, ‘We live in a universe that’s ruled by chaos and chance where all it takes is just one moment of ill fortune for all our hopes and dreams to go right down the [drain].’” The film then opens to the protagonist and male lead, Jack (Sam Claflin) nervously trying to express his romantic interest Dina (Olivia Munn), only to be interrupted by the appearance of Jack’s friend, thereby ruining any hope of a romantic encounter before Jack and Dina must part ways. The story jumps ahead three years to the wedding day of Jack’s younger sister, Hayley (Eleanor Tomlinson from British historical drama The White Queen), who is nervous that something will go wrong, ruining the day. Having lost both of their parents, Jack does his best to fulfill his role as Hayley’s older brother and reassures her that everything will be fine.

Hayley’s wedding day is endangered, however, by the uninvited appearance of her ex-boyfriend Marc, who threatens to ruin her day should she refuse to leave with him. Desperate, Hayley asks Jack to spike Marc’s drink with a strong sedative — but just after Jack finds Marc's place at the table and adds the sedative to his champagne glass, a group of mischievous children mix up the name cards at the table.  Here, The Oracle poses a question: “Do you know how many different ways eight people can sit around a table? There are thousands.” The remainder of the movie is various scenarios in which different guests sit at Marc's place, taking the sedative meant for him.

Love Wedding Repeat: Scenario 1

In this first scenario, the person who ends up drinking the sedative is Bryan (Joel Fry), Hayley’s “Man of Honor” and an aspiring actor hoping to be introduced to the guest Vitalli, an Italian filmmaker. With Marc on the loose, Jack’s attempts to catch up with Dina are constantly interrupted; meanwhile, Jack is sitting next his ex-girlfriend Amanda, making her current boyfriend Chaz wild with jealousy. Dina gets called to work before she and Jack can have a proper chance to catch up. Bryan not only ruins his chance at impressing Vitelli, he also ruins his Man of Honor speech and passes out on stage. In the ensuing chaos, Marc reveals that he and Hayley had recently had drunken sex. Roberto is crushed and attempts to walk out on Hayley, but when she tries to stop him he accidentally goes over a balcony.

Love Wedding Repeat pauses following the disastrous wedding events, and The Oracle reminds the audience that this is just one of many possible outcomes. Viewers are then treated to a montage of just a sampling of these possible outcomes.

Love Wedding Repeat: Scenarios 2 – 7

Love Wedding Repeat Hayley Marc

Love Wedding Repeat shows various scenarios that play out thanks different seating arrangements. There is one scenario in which Rebecca, Hayley's friend with a crush on Bryan, takes the sedative. In this scenario, Bryan doesn’t seem to have better luck with Vitelli; Chaz is seen proposing to a reluctant Amanda; Marc is seen getting close to Sidney, the socially-awkward odd-man-out at the table; and Dina is seen rejecting Jack. In another scenario, Amanda takes the sedative. Aside from giving Chaz no one to fight with, nothing else seemed to be different in this version of events. Similarly, when Sidney is sedated, nothing except Sidney’s story seems to be affected.

When Dina takes the sedative, Jack is seen making out with Rebecca, suggesting Jack and Dina miss their chance again; in this scenario, Bryan is seen comforting a crying Marc, and Amanda and Hayley are seen fighting. Finally, Marc takes the sedative like he’s supposed to, and surprisingly, things do appear to be less chaotic. Bryan is seen getting close to Vitelli, and Hayley probably still has a husband by the end of the day. Chaz and Sidney are seen getting along, but sadly for Jack, he and Dina do not seem to be faring well.

Love Wedding Repeat: Final Scenario

Love Wedding Repeat ending doesnt solve the problem

When Jack accidentally takes the sedative, viewers are left to wonder if it’s fate rather than bad luck that keeps Jack and Dina apart because how can anything possibly go right if Jack is out cold? At first, things definitely do not go well: Jack asks Bryan to put his finger down his throat so he can regurgitate the sedative and that’s the scene Dina walks in on, embarrassing Jack. Back at the table, Dina starts to open up to Jack but he falls asleep, greatly upsetting her. Dina spends the rest of the evening getting drunk with Sidney.

Things start to look up for Jack and the others after that, however. Bryan and Rebecca connect and he winds up falling in love with her. He manages to give a stirring speech that impresses Vitelli. Meanwhile, Jack and Hayley have a touching moment in which she confesses her slip-up with Marc, unlike in prior scenarios where Jack finds out from Marc. Jack reassures her that if her new husband couldn’t forgive a mistake then he didn’t deserve her, giving Hayley the courage to face whatever horrible thing Marc does on her wedding day. Amanda and Chaz have an amicable break-up and even Sidney finds love thanks to some advice from Jack.

The most surprising moment of the Netflix romance's final scenario, however, is the moment Marc grabs the microphone and decides against revealing Hayley’s secret. Instead, he wishes the couple the best and leaves, but not without sharing one last wordless goodbye with Hayley. The film ends with Dina being called to work and Jack, instead of accepting the seemingly inevitable, chases after her and refuses to let anything or anyone else interrupt a long-awaited kiss.

The Oracle said earlier in the film, “Something as insignificant as where we're sitting at a table is actually chance dictating whether love will succeed or fail.” While most of the film does a wonderful job showing just how true that can be, the last few minutes of the film are better captured by Bryan’s words to Jack: it all comes down to chance, and life is all about grabbing those chances when they come around. In Love Wedding Repeat, Dean Craig attempts to teach audiences that even though so many things in life are completely random, it doesn’t mean people are incapable of making their own fate.
