4-24 Lifeline — Love your neighbor - Cleveland Daily Banner

‘Love your neighbor’
Man was created a social being. This is so important that “love your neighbor as yourself” is included in the two basic and vital commandments Christ reiterated to the lawyer (Luke 22:39), second only to and like unto “love the Lord thy God with all thy heart.”
To live in a society, there has to be authority and submission. This is what Paul says, in the first few verses of Romans 13, concerning authority and submission in this social world. He makes no exception for the Christian. In fact, he emphasizes the Christian should set the example for the heathen.
We are in turbulent times. The first thought for some is “taking care of No. 1.” But in these weeks, I have seen and heard more of “love your neighbor as yourself.”
People, who I know have their own difficulties and needs, called me when I was sick, and asked, “What do you need? I’ll come and help,” even though they, too, were sheltered-in-place.
My friend who is staying with her dad during recovery from a heart attack, showed up at my door (wearing a mask) on her way to the grocery store and wanted to know what I needed.
And the neighbor – who has suffered a heart attack – bringing my trash container down my steep driveway to the garage door. So, you say, these are little things. But these little things show that someone is not “looking out for No. 1.”
I saw my downstairs tenant – after the tornadoes hit Cleveland – wade through waist-deep water to get a neighbor’s car to higher ground and then help the young woman and her little girl out of her house before they were trapped by the rising water. That same person, headed out with his chainsaw to help get the trees off a house, and took his generator to the people so they could have power.
Think about the thousands who are giving up their normal lives to take care of others – all the first responders, nurses, doctors, workers … the list is long.
They do this because “love for others” is a God-built-in quality in mankind.
And even in this “six-feet-away” mandate, we are still what God made us to be – a social being. Aren’t you glad?
