As we embark on a new month, what does February symbolize to you?
With Valentine’s Day only two weeks away, do you agree that this month should continue being coined the month of love?
It is also known for its recognitions. On Feb. 21, we observe Presidents’ Day, a national holiday falling on the third Monday honoring all presidents in our nation. The date commemorates inaugural President George Washington who was born Feb. 22, 1732, in Pope’s Creek/Wakefield Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia. The holiday was also incepted to pay homage to Abraham Lincoln, our 16th president, born Feb. 12, 1809. His humble birth took place in a one-room log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky.
Unfortunately, February is one of the most frequently misspelled words in the English language. The letter “r” after the “b” is often omitted and mispronounced.
Another fact about February is that, 58 years ago, the legendary group, The Beatles, made its American television debut on “The Ed Sullivan Show.”
February is also noted for its foreshadowing. Tomorrow, the nation will monitor the groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil, as he emerges from his burrow to foretell our climatic future. Since 1887, the woodchuck — whose full moniker is Punxsutawney Phil — seer of seers, sage of sages, prognosticator of prognosticators and weather prophet extraordinary — will take center stage in Pennsylvania. Let’s not forget our local offering, too — Sir Walter Wally, who’ll conduct his own weather foreshadowing.
Regardless of groundhog predictions, The Old Farmers Almanac of 2022 forecasts “a mixed bag of precipitation, frigid temps and more-than-average snowfall amounts” for The South in February.
Aside from being the shortest month in the calendar year, February is known for its Super Bowl event annually. This year’s offering, Super Bowl LVI, will hit airwaves Feb. 13 with halftime entertainers Mary J. Blige, Snoop Dogg, Eminem and Dr. Dre headlining from Inglewood, California.
Did you realize today marks the start of the Chinese New Year with 2022 depicted as the Year of the Tiger? This presumably signals a time of growth, prosperity and recovery for the balance of 2022.
This month also celebrates achievements as Black History Month and American Heart Month.
Whether we celebrate romance mid-month, commemorate our national leaders, applaud the efforts of medical, cardiological advancements and African Americans, or attend a festive Super Bowl LVI party, let us welcome this month with peace and gratitude.
Just as philanthropist Sarah Ban Breathnach — whose book, “Simple Abundance,” spent two years of The New York Times’ best-seller list — described, February can be a month that “arrives cold, wet and gray.”
Ban Breathnach adequately cited gratitude as “the thread we weave into the fabric of our daily lives,” stressing that, during this month of love and remembrance, we should always give thanks to God from whom all our blessed, gracious lives have been bestowed.
That, to me, fully supports the adage that not only is February — but, all the months that follow — are true, God-given blessings of love.
