BMH's Love: COVID Cases Starting To Strain Hospital - ButlerRadio.com - Butler, PA - butlerradio.com

As COVID cases surge locally, so has been the number of hospitalized patients.

Butler Health System’s Infectious Disease Director Dr. John Love says it’s now reaching a level where it’s impacting the hospital’s operations.

“We are really starting to see the volume of these patients starting to strain our health system, not unlike a lot of other places,” Love said.

Love said in addition to a growing number of patients, the hospital is experiencing staffing issues.

“We are starting to see what this does to our staff because the infection is rampant in our community. We have staff who are out sick, which reduces the number of people that we have to care for patients just in general. So not just only COVID patients, but the run of the mill, garden variety BMH patients that are still coming through,” Love said.

He also added that the staff is getting exhausted, especially because this wave of infection wasn’t necessarily expected.

“Frankly, our staff is just dealing with exhaustion of dealing with another surge of this infection, that frankly, a lot of us consider is largely preventable if people had been vaccinated,” Love said.

We’re expected to hear another update from Butler Health System on hospitalized patients later today.
