Pet costume contest, other events, encourage people to 'Love Your Library' - TribLIVE

If you wanted a reason to dress your cat like William Shakespeare, Harry Potter or even Batman, now’s the chance.

The Community Library of Allegheny Valley in Harrison is hosting the “Love Your Library Pet Costume Contest” on Saturday, Sept. 25.

It will be outdoors from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on the lawn at the library, 1522 Broadview Blvd.

“People love their pets, and we thought this would be a fun event,” library Assistant Director Suzy Ruskin said of the first-time event.

Cost is $10 for advance registration and $15 at the door.

The idea evolved from the library’s summer reading program theme “Tails & Tales.”

Four contest categories include are:

• Children’s Book Character;

• Famous Literary Character;

• Famous Classic Novel;

• Best of Show.

There will not be a parade. Judges will be available for participants to come and go with their dogs, cats, guinea pigs and other leashed/caged pet.

“Any and all pets are eligible,” Ruskin said.

If people have a pet that wouldn’t be good with other animals, or that you couldn’t get to stay in a costume for too long, the library is accepting photo submissions online.

Photos can be sent to ruskins2@ei network.net.

Winners will be announced at 1 p.m. and do not have to be there to collect their prize. Prizes are one of four pet-themed baskets brimming with animal treats, scarves and toys.

Ruskin said that with September as Love Your Library Month, it’s an ideal time to pack the schedule with events for all ages and show people that libraries are more than places to borrow books.

In addition, the library secured a matching donation from the Jack Buncher Foundation to boost fundraising this month.

Proceeds from the pet costume contest and other functions will benefit library operations.

“We’re always buying new materials,” Ruskin said. “Currently, we are working on improving to LED lighting in the library.”

Other activities scheduled this month include a program on Alle-Kiski Valley Sports Notables at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, a tie-dye event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, and a coloring contest for all ages, with entries due by Thursday, Sept. 30.

“It’s been challenging, with covid-19, to come up with ideas because a lot of what we do is based on gathering,” Ruskin said.

“We want to be here for the community however we can, and do whatever we can, to make connections.”
