Share the Love

From students, parents, faculty, staff, and alums to someone special

Each year, BU Today does something special to celebrate Valentine’s Day. In years past, we’ve posted photo essays about alums who met and fell in love at BU. This year, we decided to shake it up a bit. So we invited any member of the BU community—student, faculty, staff, parent, alum—to write a Valentine to someone they love and share it with them—and with us.

We heard from more than two dozen people. The messages are sweet, heartfelt, full of tenderness, humor, and of course, love. Take a look. Our thanks to all who took part in this special project.

Photo of Melissa Dover Gandel (CAS’98) and her partner wearing baseball caps, with a white outline that looks like that of a polaroid. The photo is overlaid on a background with watercolor blobs with hearts cut out.

From Comm Ave to Kodiak, Alaska, from basements to mountaintops, from riding the T to piloting a minivan, from being babies to having babies: We have grown and learned and changed together. Laughed often and leaned on each other through the hard times. Adventured and quarantined. It’s been 26 years since we met in the West cafeteria; 22 years since I decided to go on an adventure in the Great North and you were crazy enough to follow me; 12 years since we decided we couldn’t live thousands of miles apart anymore; 11 years since we got married. You remain my best friend and my rock. I can’t imagine doing this crazy life without you. Happy Valentine’s Day, Matt. I love you.

From: Melissa Dover Gandel (CAS’98)

Photo of Samantha Casey (CAS’21), holding a trombone, and her partner in their BU marching band uniforms. The photo is overlaid on a white and gold striped background and a few pink hearts are drawn over the background and photo.

Happy Valentine’s Day! I’d give anything to be back in uniform with you, tearing it up at a marching band festival or in the stands at hockey and basketball games. We’ve come a long way from when I showed you the way to your dorm after the first day of band camp, or when you stopped me outside Marciano to ask if I had extra potting soil. I guess it’s to be expected that there’ll never be a dull moment with a trumpet player from New Jersey, but thanks for making every day an adventure. Can’t wait to spend some time at our bench outside the LAW auditorium. Love you!

From: Samantha Casey (CAS’21)

Dear Dyuanhong,

The past months of separation helped me better appreciate what we shared and what we still share now. I can confidently say that I never knew this type of love until we met. Not to say that I wasn’t a complete person before, but you do elevate me. The world can be a tough place, and what’s happening nowadays has been rough for us. Just remember that I’ll always be there for you. Together, we are a place that I find comfort and joy in. Sending you virtual hugs and kisses every day. Take care of yourself and eat plenty of good food, until we can take better care of each other and share good food once again.

Love,
Druabbit

Hey Z,

Even though you couldn’t make it to Boston, you’ve been with me every step of the way. I’ve felt your presence in every endeavor. And I’ve felt that because of the small, conscious effort you make everyday. I experience your love in every text and phone call, in every decision to wake up early or stay up late. And there are special days, too, where we watch stuff together or act as each other’s therapists (OOPS). Even as the distance gets larger, our bluetooth-like connection manages to stick through. I cherish you on most days, but particularly on a socially sanctioned day like today. Here’s truckloads of love from miles away.

You have brought so much fun and laughter into my life since meeting six years ago in Myles Standish Hall, when we were both undergrad RAs. It was so touching to then be proposed to in the English Room of Myles a month ago, where we first met. (Special thank you to Chester Li, hall director of Myles, for helping Aaron to arrange the proposal and for introducing us all those years ago. Although, I do wish that Chester had given me a heads up so I could have gotten my nails done and worn a cute outfit!) To many more Valentine’s Days with you, Aaron—I look forward to beginning this new chapter of our lives together.

Last Valentine’s Day, we were having the absolute time of our lives in Venice, seeing the most beautiful sights and exploring the whole city by foot! Even though this year’s Valentine’s Day won’t be as extravagant, it will be filled with just as much love as ever. Having spent almost 4 whole years together, I know that you are the absolute one for me in my life and there’s nothing our love can’t overcome! Dear Randall,

Happy Valentine’s Day! When I first met you, I’ll admit I was nervous, and based on your constant hissing, I’d say you were uneasy, too. I’ve never had sole responsibility for another creature before and you are an especially unique little fellow to take care of. You’ve taught me so much about life in the five months that I’ve known you, like balancing my spiky side and my soft side, making the best of limited space, and keeping a sense of curiosity about the world. Much love today and always, little guy!

I’ll be home again before we both know it! And even though I have to be away for both of our birthdays and Valentine’s Day, I can’t wait to make more memories with you when I get back. Thank you so much for being there for me no matter what, and I will always be here for you, too. Here’s to more adventures together, and hopefully better ones once covid is over! Happy Valentine’s Day, I love you!
