MATTITUCK, NY — The community is coming together to shower love on Mattituck High School seniors who have seen their school year derailed due to the coronavirus.
A new Facebook page, Mattituck Class of 2021, was created to help make memories for seniors.
"Wondering what are "Senior Sweet Treats Days" and how you can add to the fun for our seniors?" the page asks.
On the 21st of every month, seniors will receive a surprise "sweet treat," the page said. This month it was a goodie bag filled with valentine's candies and notes.
The goal is to expand the "sweet treats" from candy bags to include all sorts of local swag including gift cards from local businesses for surprises such as ice cream, coffee, pizza, and more.
"The idea is all about the community coming together and supporting the entire Class of 2021 — we're all about spreading the love and joy to all these great kids," the page said.
According to Nicole Brewer, who helped to organize the effort: "It's been a tough year for the kids and our community. The kids have looked forward to their senior year and all the fun things that go along with it for so long and it began with a hybrid model that at least got them into school — but separated. There was no homecoming, fall sports, no fall play. There were restrictions for clubs and more."
Finally, in December, all of the kids were in the school at the same time and they were thrilled to be there, seeing faces they hadn't seen in months, she said.
A group of senior parents got together after they saw what the Riverhead parents were doing to honor their students and wondered what they could do to celebrate their kids, she said.
"With only 92 seniors we thought it would be best to ask the community to Adopt-The-Class," Brewer said.
As prom plans come together, the group has creative ideas to help make the event as fun and special as possible, and the hope is to end the year with a senior parade, modeled after what the Class of 2020 parents did last year, Brewer said.
"It was so moving and special," she said.
Despite the challenges, Brewer said the school district has "done a fantastic job balancing all of the complicated COVID restrictions and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines without losing the high standards of education we've come to appreciate at Mattituck High School. It's not easy but when I see so many parents and kids missing out on class time I'm glad our kids go to MHS. As we look at the second half of the year and things are opening up we're hopeful that small gifts give the kids the boost they need to finish their senior year strong. We wanted them to feel special and loved."
Donations of all kinds are sought from the community to support efforts, Brewer said. "Maybe someone wants to help and they have $20 to spare. We'll use that to purchase gift cards from local businesses for the monthly 'Senior Sweet Treat Day' surprises. A cup of coffee, a milkshake, a sandwich, a haircut, a slice of pizza, a manicure, even swag from the school store — in our community there are lots of fun things that the seniors will love and it supports our local businesses who have also had a tough year. A win-win for everyone."
Parents have also reached out to the North Fork Fairies Facebook "dusting" network. "They know how to spread happiness. I'm hoping that together we can come together and give these seniors a great send-off," Brewer said.
Those who would like to be part of the fun can donate via Venmo to @MCPTSA and should be sure to comment that they'd like your donation to go toward the "Senior Sweet Treat Days" in March, April, and May. Donations can also be dropped off to Lisa Bieber at the high school and Brewer said she would have a donation box on her front porch, too.
"We'll be sure to share their masked/smiling faces here each month," Brewer said.
