Love on the Spectrum spoilers follow.
Following eleven individuals with autism on their quest to find ‘the one,’ Love on the Spectrum is undoubtedly the most heart-warming addition to Netflix’s recent flurry of dating shows – though the autistic community have varied thoughts on it.
Although it only hit the streaming service last month, the series was actually first screened in Australia back in October last year, so there’s been quite a few developments since the cameras went away. From weddings to comic cons, here’s a look at what some of the show's stars have been up to.
Michael
For many, Michael was the breakout star of the show. The 25-year-old charmed everyone with his enthusiasm for Gilligan’s Island, super smart fashion sense and unassuming swagger ("an A+ partner looks like me"). In fact, it was hard to disagree with his mother’s claim that "every family needs a Michael".
He was also the perfect gentleman when his date Amanda struggled to cope with the formality of their posh meal out together. And Michael has since told Refinery 29 that he took a lot from the experience, saying "I did learn that you have to feel some kind of connection with the person you are dating. If it becomes clear that the person isn’t enjoying themselves, I don’t think the date should continue."

Michael has also been enjoying the attention he’s been getting since Love on the Spectrum first aired. "They complimented me about how wonderful I was," he recalled to ABC Illawarra about the general response he’s received while out and about in his hometown.
Speaking to Netflix in a video released on August 3, 2020, Michael revealed that he's currently using one dating app to find love. He also shared his dreams for the future, which include buying a house, buying a cat, becoming a husband, becoming independently wealthy, and establishing a voice-acting career.
Chloe
Queer participant Chloe had little chemistry with her first date, Marcus, but appeared to connect while picking sunflowers with fellow anime fan Lotus.
She told Refinery 29, "With Lotus, the conversation kept flowing and was hardly ever awkward. No one made me feel the same way as she did before. I kept smiling for hours after our date ended."
Sadly, this wasn’t the start of a beautiful relationship, but her reality TV stint has now given Chloe the confidence to be more selective when it comes to the dating game. She added, "Before the show, I would accept dates because I was asked. I thought it was rude to decline. However, being on the show made me realise what I’m looking for, and it’s okay to be picky. You don’t have to accept every offer you are given."
Speaking to Netflix in the aforementioned video, Chloe is now working towards her dream of becoming a sign-language interpreter.
Thomas and Ruth
Business card-collecting Ruth and bus-driving Thomas were one of two couples featured who proved that autism isn’t a barrier to a long-term relationship. The pair had already been together for four years before opening their lives up to the cameras, and following a sweet public proposal, they were getting ready to walk down the aisle.

The big news is that Thomas and "the spicy chicken masala to his mild mango chicken" have indeed tied the knot since the show first aired. Ruth posted several photos of the occasion on Instagram, and also revealed where they spent their first full day as husband and wife in a selfie captioned, "Rocked up to @catcuddlecafe day after our wedding, to have a much-needed peaceful and relaxing session with sleeping kittens."
Since the show stopped filming, Thomas and Ruth have moved out of their unit into a new house.
Kelvin
Shy manga fan Kelvin was no doubt left feeling slightly shellshocked by his introduction to the dating scene. His match Jessica insisted on playing Twitch from the moment they first met, and as the evening drew to a close, she warned him, "Don’t automatically think we’re going to start kissing."

Perhaps the experience has deterred Kelvin from dating for now as there’s little sign of romance on his Instagram feed. However, he still looks like he’s having the time of his life, attending various comic cons and visiting China with his equally sweet single father.
Speaking to Netflix since, Kelvin has revealed that his dream is to secure a job at Australia Post.
Mark
Mark being consoled by his father after getting friendzoned by his date Maddi was one of the most touching moments of the entire series. But thankfully, the wannabe paleontologist wasn’t put off from getting back on the horse.
In fact, having attended a dating boot camp session run by clinical psychologist Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson, Mark told Refinery 29 that he’s now more equipped than ever to find the one. He said, "I learned to ask a lot of questions and how to talk and behave when dating. Having these skills has really built up my confidence, and it’s given me a new lease on the wonderful but complicated world of love and relationships."
Mark also revealed in another interview with Touchstone magazine that he and his second match-up Lauren sadly didn’t make it past a second date.
However, he has nothing but positive things to say about his time on the show: "I was always bullied at school and people made fun of me growing up. I was pretty down in the dumps for a while but I feel like now I’ve absolutely overcome that and proved people wrong through Love on the Spectrum."
Mark also appeared in Netflix's update video, where he said, "I'm still looking for love. It's something worth fighting for."
Olivia
Olivia was perhaps more prepared for the cameras than anyone else on the show – she’s long been a part of the Options Theatre Company, an organisation which enables those with a disability to explore their creative streak.
However, the aspiring actress told CBC Radio’s Day 6 that her background actually hindered her Love on the Spectrum experience. She said, "I had advice from my director before going into this... ‘Oh, just be yourself.’ There’s this weird thing with actors: you can’t actually be yourself on screen. You physically can’t because another version of yourself comes out."
However, Olivia believes that the show will have a positive influence on the autistic community, adding "I didn’t really see many people with autism with partners. The stereotype is like, us weirdos living in our parents’ basements until we’re like 80, alone and single. So, I just assumed that would be my life."
Chatting to Netflix since, Olivia has revealed that she's bisexual, and now plans to embark on some dates with women.
The others
Love on the Spectrum’s cast members aren’t as social media-obsessed as those from Love Is Blindor Too Hot to Handle, so unfortunately, we’re none the wiser as to how Andrew and engaged couple Jimmy and Sharnae have fared since.
Maddi provided a mini-update in the Netflix video released on August 3, revealing that she now has a job in doggy day care and plans to learn how to drive.
Let’s hope we get further update during the second season which is in the casting process right now.
