Prayer Tip: Love, Joy and Peace - Leawood - Church of the Resurrection

Daily Scripture

Galatians 5:16-23

I say be guided by the Spirit and you won’t carry out your selfish desires. A person’s selfish desires are set against the Spirit, and the Spirit is set against one’s selfish desires. They are opposed to each other, so you shouldn’t do whatever you want to do. But if you are being led by the Spirit, you aren’t under the Law. The actions that are produced by selfish motives are obvious, since they include sexual immorality, moral corruption, doing whatever feels good, idolatry, drug use and casting spells, hate, fighting, obsession, losing your temper, competitive opposition, conflict, selfishness, group rivalry, jealousy, drunkenness, partying, and other things like that. I warn you as I have already warned you, that those who do these kinds of things won’t inherit God’s kingdom. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.

Prayer Tip

from Chris Holliday, Resurrection West Connection & Care Pastor and Adult Discipleship Director

I remember going to Vacation Bible Camp as a child and learning a catchy little song that has stayed with me all these years. It’s sort of like another song that gets stuck in your head from a certain Magic Kingdom Disney ride. I won’t mention the name of that song because if I do, it won’t leave you for several hours (or days). Too late? Sorry, friends.

The song from Vacation Bible Camp, though, is not only one I want to stay with me, but to live in my heart, words, and actions always. It puts Galatians 5:23 to music: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”

As we begin a new sermon series centered around this key idea from Paul’s letter to the Galatians, we are reminded that this fruit is borne by the Spirit’s work in our lives. These are the traits God wants us to embody and enact. This is who God calls us to be.

Today, Pastor Adam will focus on the first three in the list: love, joy and peace. As you pray this week, I invite you to ask God to help you show love, bring joy and offer peace to those around you and beyond, and to reflect upon and give thanks for the daily ways in which God has empowered you to do that.

Holy God,

May we recognize and join in the work of your Spirit this week. May we bear fruit and love our neighbors near and far. May we be the people you have called us to be. We pray these things in the name of Jesus, the one who taught us to live in your ways of love, joy and peace.

Amen.
