A breathtaking story of love - Chico Enterprise-Record

PARADISE — Theatre on the Ridge in Paradise has a reputation of offering audiences griping and rewarding performances.

On Oct. 7-24 TOTR lives up to another fascinating theatrical experience with the 2-act play, “Annapurna,” a breathtaking story about the longevity of love.

“Annapurna” was written by American playwright Sharr White. His plays have appeared on Broadway and off-Broadway. This play premiered in San Francisco in 2011 to glowing reviews.

The ridge performances are directed by Amber Miller. The play features two actors. Joyce Henderson plays in the role of Emma and Joe Hilsee portrays Ulysses, two former lovers.

After 20 years apart, Emma tracks Ulysses to a trailer park in the middle of nowhere for a final reckoning. What takes place is a meditation on love and loss with two people in one room. Two fine and ferociously damaged people are caught in the whirlpool of not being able to live with or without each other. The closer the characters get to understanding what drove them apart, the more they draw together.

Theatre on the Ridge executive director July Clemens expressed her pleasure with offering “Annapurna” to the audiences.

“‘Annapurna’ was set to open just after the pandemic closed everything down 18 months ago,” she said. “To be able to finally bring it to the stage at TOTR is so gratifying. The story is rough around the edges and tattered love and loss features two of Chico’s finest actors in Joe Hilsee and Joyce Henderson, and we can’t wait to share it with our audiences. We are thrilled to be open and providing the magic and healing of theater acts again.

“We are operating as cautiously and safely as we can with our COVID guidelines in place. All of our staff, performers and volunteers at TOTR are fully vaccinated, and we still require masks for all inside the theatre regardless of vaccination status. Only the performers are unmasked while onstage. We give the audience advisory note this play has an adult theme with explicit language.”

Tickets are available online only at http://www.totr.org. Box office can be reached at 877-5760. Tickets are $16 reserved, $12 general. Bargain tickets for $10 at the door only are available on Thursday nights and Sunday matinees.
