EAST LIVERPOOL–A nationwide movement affiliated with the non-profit Lasagna Love has found its place in Columbiana County.
Lasagna Love describes itself as a grassroots movement consisting of 20,000 volunteers across 50 states.
Courtney Richards-Beatty was introduced to Lasagna Love scrolling through YouTube almost a month ago. Beatty is now making lasagna as the Regional Leader of Lasagna Love for Columbiana County.
“It’s a great thing. I am so excited I am able to do this for people because we need it,” Beatty said.
Lasagna Love has a simple mission. Feed families, spread kindness and strengthen communities.
Rhiannon Menn started Lasagna Love during the pandemic as a way to reach out to struggling neighbors. Menn did not define what their struggles needed to be. Menn met neighbors where they were, whether those struggles were emotional, financial or physical.
“Anyone can request a meal,” Beatty explained. “It’s just neighbors helping neighbors.”
Beatty was surprised Lasagna Love was available in Columbiana County. When Beatty signed up to be a chef, she saw people waiting months to receive a meal.
“Well, people need to be talking about this. I need to spread the word,” Beatty said.
Realizing the advantages she had as a married mother with her own small business inspired Beatty to take action.
“My kids help me make them, all of them, and they get excited about it. I’m teaching them. This is what we do if we are able to do it,” Beatty said.
Beatty hopes to build relationships by collaborating with local school districts utilizing home economics classes as a way to build community outreach skills.
She’s teaching people about this program because even people under 18 can sign up to be chefs as long as they have their parents’ permission, Beatty said.
According to Beatty there are only three chefs in the area.
“There are plenty of people that need help getting food and receiving that but if we don’t have enough chefs, then people are waiting for months and months and months,” Beatty said.
Beatty intends on creating a network of chefs allowing people in need of a meal to get help within two weeks’ time.
Those interested in receiving and making meals can find sign up information at lasagnalove.org.
Beatty invites people to contact her with questions at courtneylasagnalove@yahoo.com.
“I want people to know that this is the real deal. It is so easy and simple,” Beatty said.
