KISS returns to comics in a new series from Dynamite Comics. The rock band is no stranger to comics, as they've been appearing in assorted issues and series since 1977 and their latest has the potential to be killer.
KISS - the iconic American rock band - formed in 1973 with members Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, Paul Stanley, and Peter Criss. They have become one of the most recognizable rock bands in music as a result of their stage presence and signature look. Each member has their own stage name that serves as an alter ego in various projects. Gene Simmons is the Demon, Ace Frehley was the Space Ace/Spaceman, Paul Stanley is the Starchild, and Peter Criss was the Catman. Frehley and Criss left the band long ago, but their stage personas have lived on with future members.
Dynamite Comics has announced an upcoming comic series that will star the band. KISS: Phantom Obsession will be written by Ian Edginton with art by Celor. The series is set to release in August 2021 and will be a horror adventure story, seemingly along the lines of Stephen King's Misery. After being booked for a private gig, KISS will find themselves face to face with a crazy super fan who may just endanger their lives.
The summary for the series is as follows:
Darius Cho is the richest man in existence and the most reclusive. To many, he's a ghost, a phantom... whilst others believe he doesn't exist and is actually a front for a maze of companies and consortiums. Truth is, he does exist and he's a KISS fan! KISS are hired by Cho to play a private party and from there, Cho's obsession takes center stage and it's the fight of the band's life!
KISS has had their fair share of trouble with phantoms before, having been in the films, KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park (1978) and Scooby-Doo! and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery (2015), though this is bound to reach completely different levels of horror. The story takes more of a Stephen King twist, focusing on the obsessive behavior that crazed super fans can exhibit towards their chosen personalities. How far Cho will be willing to push the band is something comic fans will have to wait to see. The included covers above by Jae Lee, Stuart Sayger, Tim Seeley, and Celor all speak to the KISS's style. They are theatric in a way with their powers on full display. The final photo cover is a highly recognizable Christmas season photograph of the band from 1976. Surprisingly, however, none of the covers shows Simmons with his tongue out, a gesture that has become a staple for the Demon over the years.
KISS has had numerous comic series, with this being their latest. The band's first full comic appearance was in Marvel Super Special #1 from 1977, which was printed with ink that was mixed with the band's blood. Their previous series also took on the horror genre, pitting the band against the undead. KISS: Zombies was preceded by a team-up with Vampirella. This is just the latest adventure for the band - and hopefully, it is as wacky, zany, and superpower-filled as their previous ones. KISS: Phantom Obsession from Dynamite Comics releases August 4, 2021.
