There’s at least one person who wasn’t blown away by the first-look photos of Lily James and Sebastian Stan as the title characters of Hulu’s upcoming series Pam & Tommy. Just over a week after James’s and Stan’s stunning transformation into exes Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee hit social media, Anderson’s longtime friend Courtney Love harshly criticized the project and its leading lady.
In a since-deleted Facebook post published on May 16, Love wrote that she found the idea of the show to be “so fucking outrageous,” saying its existence was “further causing” Anderson “complex trauma.”
Hulu is billing the project as “a comedic limited series on the true story behind the release of the first-ever viral video in history—the sex tape of Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee.” The real-life couple, who have two children together, were married from 1995 to 1998. They eventually sued distributor Internet Entertainment Group for releasing the sex tape without their consent. (Anderson and Lee reached a confidential settlement with IEG.)
In her Facebook post, Love recalled the anguish Anderson felt after the tape was stolen. “When Pam / tommy sex tape was out / myself [Hole drummer Patty Schemel] @pattyschemel and [Hole bassist Melissa Auf der Maur] @xmadmx were making a record,” Love wrote. “And the lone women in many recording studios in la. Where all / ALL! The staff engineers/producers/owners / were watching the sex tape with huge schadenfreude . . Guffaws, It was disgusting. I banned anyone discussing it. . It destroyed my friend Pamela’s life. Utterly.”
The Hole frontwoman also said that she was asked to approve the use of her December 1994 Rolling Stone cover for Pam & Tommy. “I said ‘fuck no.’ shocked,” Love wrote.
“My heart goes out to Pammy,” she concluded, adding, “And shame on lily James whoever the fuck she is.”
Anderson and Lee have yet to comment on Love’s criticism or on the show itself, which they are not involved with. Instead, the series was developed by Seth Rogen (who also plays the man responsible for stealing said infamous sex tape) and Evan Goldberg, written by Rob Siegel, and directed by I, Tonya’s Craig Gillespie. The show, which is currently in production, also costars Nick Offerman, Taylor Schilling, and Andrew Dice Clay.
