Tournament of Love - TAPinto.net

Can you feel it? Can you hear it? Love is in the air as friends get ready to celebrate Valentine's Day and the Music and Lyrics class at Governor Livingston High School is getting in on the fun as they prepare for the annual "Tournament of Love" as part of the Winter curriculum.

Music and Lyrics is one of many creative electives offered at Governor Livingston High School that students can select for credits. This semester's class has 11 students who are juniors and seniors, but the course is open to students across all grade levels. The class, offered through the English Department, has been an elective option since 2017.

Lindsay Mirabella, English Teacher and teacher of the class, said, "I created this course because I love music and I know that many students are able to relate to other content and topics through music. Though it is all about music and lyrics, the course very much merges music and English class together. Music is an integral part of our culture and society. Artists use their music and lyrics to express themselves, draw our attention to societal norms and issues, and advocate for change. As listeners, we are active participants."

For the "Tournament of Love" project, students have been tasked with choosing and making a case for what they believe to be the best love song of all time. They present their 'case' to the class and voting commences. This year, in an effort to add a little extra fun to the competition, the community has been invited to participate in the 'Fan Favorite' category by reviewing the student submissions and casting their vote.

According to Mirabella, "This course is a great way for students to practice and develop skills that are typically taught and developed in the English classroom. These skills have a multitude of real-life applications that extend far beyond the classroom. The Tournament of Love project, for example, requires students to think critically about and interpret the lyrics of their chosen song. They then must use the text to construct a compelling and persuasive argument for why those lyrics are powerful and impactful. In competing in the various rounds of the tournament, they are practicing their speaking and listening skills through the presentation of their ideas. Students are doing all of these things in the context of a fun competition wherein they get to discuss the music they are passionate about."

The final round of the competition will take place on Friday, February 12th, just in time for Valentine's Day. Click the attached Google form to vote in the "Fan Favorite" portion of the competition and then stay tuned to see which song will be named Best Love Song by voters.

The tournament winner and winner of the Fan Favorite will be announced Friday, February 12, just in time for Valentine's Day. Will it be an older classic or a newer hit that is on the charts today? Be sure to cast your vote!
