SUNY Geneseo students take a look at love in virtual performance - The Daily News Online

GENESEO – Students at SUNY Geneseo will tell a story about love lost and then found again as part of an upcoming virtual production called, “I Love You Because.”

“It is a cast of six people and it circles around two couples and what love is like in New York City,” said actor Sandra Kralik.

The story, which was filmed for release online this month, features a well-meaning, but overly conservative greeting card writer, Austin Bennet, who finds his longtime girlfriend Catherine with another man. Austin’s brother, Jeff Bennet convinces Austin to go on a double date, and the two meet Marcy Fitzwilliams and Diana Bingley. Marcy, a free-spirited ultra liberal photographer, couldn’t be less suited for Austin, while Diana and Jeff (she’s an actuary, he’s a ... well, it’s not clear what he is, but certainly not respectable) are similarly mismatched. Despite the differences, the two pairs are soon mutually attracted and definitively involved.

But just as soon as Austin meets someone, his ex comes running back to him, said director Scott Scaffidi.

Students filmed the production over the course of 16 days. Right from the get-go, they said the audience will be hooked.

“It is just going to put a smile on people’s faces. We need a good laugh and a good cry and I think you will get it from this story,” said Scaffidi. “It just reminds you of what is important in life.”

Some audience members might find the story familiar because throughout the production there are nods to Jane Austin’s “Pride and Prejudice,” a story that features wealthy bachelors and families with single daughters seeking engagements.

From historical nods to classic romance, and a musical score both classic and contemporary, actors said the film has something everyone can relate to.

“It is about overcoming first impressions or who you think your idea partner is. Loving someone because of their differences from you,” said actor Will Snyder.

Scaffidi said the story has “this sort of touching, universal story about love and what it means to a young person today.”

While the themes may be universal, the actors said putting the production together was anything but conventional. Most of the filming was done virtually.

There were no audience members to react to the action, or laugh at a funny joke. Instead, actors were in front of only a camera and a lens to look into.

“With the camera, it is right in front of you, so there is so much intimacy. It is learning to trust yourself and to trust your abilities,” said Snyder.

And trusting that you picked out the right clothes to wear. Actor Jacob Anspach was also in charge of costumes.

“So we would talk about what we had and figure out what the characters would wear in that scene,” Anspach said.

Anspach filmed his scenes from home in front of a green screen, which meant that the costumes could not have green or blue as they would interfere with the scene.

A green screen is a blank green wall that allows images to be superimposed on the scene. If an actor wears green clothes, he or she “disappears” on the screen with the superimposed image filling in the green part of their clothing or accessories.

Also working remotely was Scaffidi, the director.

“The direction by myself was both done virtually, so I was never in the room with anyone,” he said. “I was giving direction and choreography through a computer screen.”

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic the actors said they were often working alone and sometimes found themselves testing out the lines on some unusual people.

“It was like, was that actually funny because you won’t really know, so you just have to trust. Our in-person crew set up two little studios for us and we would run a scene and if they would laugh, I would be like ‘Oh, OK, that was funny,’ ” said Snyder.

The film is still being edited and when complete the actors said it will be about two hours long. It will be available Feb. 12 to 14 for viewing online at geneseo.booktix.com.
