Letter: Valentine's Day offers love and joy | Letters | thedailynewsonline.com - The Daily News Online

It’s already February, the month we celebrate Valentine’s Day, Black History month, and two of our Presidents, Lincoln and Washington; oh, and I can’t forget Groundhog’s day.

What a pleasure it is to celebrate and have fun doing so.

Groundhog’s day is a big celebration in Pennsylvania and if that little guy sees his shadow, there will be six more weeks of winter. Of course he always sees his shadow as it’s only the first of February and we have all of March to contend with before spring comes.

Yes, we will have at least six more weeks of winter and maybe more.

We no longer celebrate the birthdays of Washington and Lincoln but when I was little we got both birthdays off from school. Now it is called Presidents day and the schools have only one day off.

Most of all I think of February as that month of love! Sending Valentines, giving gifts of candy and flowers to those we love.

Love is when we can put aside our differences and see the good in everyone. I came across a quote, by Martin Luther King, that I thought was appropriate for this month. He said, “Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into a friend.” And he practiced that as he loved his enemies and fought for freedom for his people.

In the Bible in First Corinthians 13: 1, it says, “If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.” In other words if I don’t have God’s love, I just make noise. If I haven’t accepted God’s love, which is Jesus his Son, and have him in my heart, I don’t have what is important.

One of my little great grandsons, who was five at the time, was looking through his Papa’s Bible and came to a picture of Jesus, standing by a door, with no handle, and knocking. So he asked his grandpa, “what is Jesus doing?”

My son explained that Jesus was knocking at the door, which represents the door to your heart, and asking for that person to open the door to his heart and let Him in.

Revelations 4:20 says, “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.”(NIV) There is no handle on the door so Jesus can’t open the door, that person has to open the door to his heart and invite Jesus in. My great grandson thought for a moment and said, “Papa — I never let Jesus out.”

Oh, to be as trusting as a child and have the love of Jesus in your heart and never let Him out.

One is never too young or too old to accept Jesus as Lord, but one can be too late in accepting Jesus into their heart. I did accept Jesus when I was just a child and I’m so thankful that He has never left.

During this month of love won’t you join me at my Kitchen Table and open the door of your heart and invite Jesus in.
