Ali McGraw and Ryan O'Neal reunite for 50th anniversary of 'Love Story' - Page Six

“Love means never having to say you’re sorry.”

That immortal line uttered by Ali McGraw in the weepy drama “Love Story” turns 50 this year, and the actors who played the doomed lovers, McGraw and Ryan O’Neal, have stayed close over the five decades.

“It’s been a fast 50,” O’Neal quipped to Town and Country. “I don’t have those relationships with my wives!”

The 79-year-old actor won the role of Oliver, a rich preppy, over 1,000 contenders. At their first screen test, he and McGraw kissed so hard he was certain he had won the role, only to be told that McGraw, now 81, smooched that way with all of her potential co-stars. Nevertheless, O’Neal proclaims that “the chemistry has managed to sustain itself for 50 years.”

The film, in which — spoiler alert — McGraw tragically dies of an unknown disease, was an instant box office smash, garnering seven Oscar nominations and picking up one for its maudlin score.

And as for that immortal line about love and apologies, McGraw dismisses it as poppycock.

“It doesn’t mean anything! I’ve learned that we can make terrible mistakes with people we love,” she said. “Try not to do it again — and try to clean up the hurt. It’s the truth.”
