Love can be found during any time; even in the time of COVID.
That is the story of Lucio Aguirre, 26, and Justice Oglethorpe, 22. The couple, who will celebrate their four-year dating anniversary this week, looked past courtship and toward matrimony following an engagement fit for Hollywood on June 13.
Oglethorpe, a manager at El Dorado’s Stars Cinema, was planning a birthday party for her better half, but unbeknownst to her, all her plans were a part of a ruse created by Aguirre that led to the engagement.
“We have a mutual friend I was texting the whole time while planning his party and every time I’d text her with plans she’d text him,” Oglethorpe said. “It was perfect.”
Aguirre knew in January he wanted to propose by the summer, but it wasn’t until he spoke with the mutual friend of his and Oglethorpe’s that the plan came together.
“My friend said ‘let’s just plan a big surprise birthday party for you with her (Oglethorpe), and you can use that to propose,” Aguirre said. “That was perfect because she (Oglethorpe) is a big planner and once she had her mind set on something there is no taking it off it.”
Stars Cinema recently put together a party room prior to widespread lockdowns caused by the novel coronavirus. Since the room was unable to be used prior to lockdown, Oglethorpe and her manager decided that a surprise birthday party for Aguirre would be the best way to test it. But while she was planning the perfect celebration, Aguirre was working behind the scenes to write the perfect romance.
“They were getting together and shooting the (engagement) video while I was at work,” Oglethorpe said. “I’d come home and he’d have popcorn from the store and I’d say ‘I could have brought you better popcorn from Stars.’ It went right over my head.”
Keeping the secret alive was not without its challenges, though, Aguirre said.
“The biggest struggle was to make sure she was at work when we’d do the filming,” he said. “I’d either have to have our friends out of our house when she got home, or act like we were just hanging out without anything else going on. It was a bit convoluted, but all worked out in the end.”
The day of, Oglethorpe was set to attend a baby shower, which created the perfect cover so as not to arouse suspicion from Aguirre for his surprise party. She spent the day arranging the party room, preparing table settings with her boss and building anticipation for Aguirre’s arrival.
“There’s no telling how many tables my boss helped me move,” she said. “He kept me cool the whole time, and I feel a little bad because we weren’t there too long since it ended up not being a birthday party.”
The surprise was set for 7 p.m., and like clockwork, at 6:55 a friend of the happy couple’s texted Oglethorpe to let her know Aguirre had arrived.
“I was able to peep over a wall and I saw Lucio looking out in to the hallway just waiting,” she said. “I’m not sure if I knew 100% right then, but I felt like I started sinking into the floor. A second later the video came on the screen that said ‘Coming Soon,’ and that’s how I knew it was going to happen.”
The video showcased a couple reenacting Aguirre and Oglethorpe’s relationship for almost two minutes. The film finished, the house lights illuminated and Aguirre made his way into the theatre to make the big reveal.
“I walked in there and saw her crying and I started crying from the joy and excitement,” Aguirre said. “I had this whole speech planned, but ended up just getting down on one knee and saying ‘Will you marry me?’”
The romantic double cross worked like a charm and launched the couple into the planning stages of their upcoming union, which will be followed by a reception in El Dorado.
“He made it perfect,” Oglethorpe said.
